I have a steady SRS light showing in the IP when I start the car (2000 Grand Prix GT). From reading through the Service Manual, the light should flash 7 times to indicate that it's going through a diagnostics, and then go out to indicate the system is OK. All the information I'm reading tells me there's no way to reset the light without a Scan Tool. I was wondering if there are any known common causes, or problem area's that I could focus on to try and track down the cause without needing to use a scan tool? Is there a work-around to resetting the light, or a "trick" way to reset the system that's not commonly known?

In case someone suggests I go down to the local auto parts store to rent the tool to read the code(s), I live in California, where for some (unknown to me) reason you can't rent the tool anymore! This is a "Dealer or Repair Shop" service only I'm told, unless I want to buy one. Unbelievable!!

Also, is it correct that the Seat Belts are tied in with the SRS system, and that a faulty latch will trigger the light? My seat belt indicator light works as it should, so I'm assuming those can't be the problem if it is part of the system.

Open your glove box, pop out the stash compartment on the right, and you'll see the fuse box. Check the fuse marked SIR, if it's blown the light will come on steady. If the fuse is good, you may have trouble codes stored or corrosion/shorts in the wiring harness or connectors somewhere. Water damage on the passenger side floor could cause problems in the SIR system, so your best bet would be to have it checked out at the dealer.

One of the first things I checked was that SIR fuse. Replaced it with another just in case. Light still remains lit after start-up.

I had some corrosion issues at the Blower Motor Resister terminals that caused me problems with the fan turning on and off while running the A/C. I didn't even think about another possible corrosion issue with the SDM Module connector under the Passenger Seat! Thanks for the reminder. I'm going to give that Connector a looking over.

You're welcome, and if you haven't already installed the updated water deflector yet, here's the link: Water in floorboard (Take 2) - The Permanent Fix

Well I've checked just about everything that I could think of related to the SRS system. Being new to all this, I'm sure I could have missed something.

I checked the connectors to both Air Bags for corrosion (none). Took the Passenger Seat out to get to the Module to check that connector. No corrosion there either. As a matter of fact, that module uses a pretty heavy duty water proof connector that didn't want to come off too easily. I read that the Seat Belt switch is also tied in with the SRS. The Seat Belt light works as it's suppose to. From what I could figure, there is no switch or interaction from the Passenger belt. Fuse is good in the fuse panel. Was reading online about it possibly being the Clock Spring behind the wheel. The symptoms I read of a bad clock spring are a "clicking" noise when turning the wheel, which I don't have. And that the horn and radio controls won't function on the wheel. That all works as it's suppose to.

Short of having no choice but to get ripped at the dealer to just read the code(s), is there a way to get a "Flash Code" out of the SRS light by jumping terminals at the ALDL under the dash? I know this can be done on other makes and model's, but was wondering if this option is avalible on the 2000 Grand Prix.

If I'm forced to purchase a code reader, which brand or model will read Body Code error's, or "B" codes?

The only one's I can find read Power Train codes, or "P" code's only.

This one can read, display, and erase airbag codes and definitions for most domestic vehicles 1996-2008: OTC Tools (OTC9450)

Amazon has it for $199.99 with free shipping: OTC Tools (OTC9450)

Thanks for that link! Looks like if I can't get any other information from anyone about this SRS issue, I'm going to have to shell out for the tool.

I've got to wonder from the lack of response, is the SRS an uncommon problem area with these cars?

I don't know that I've ever seen a thread about it before. I could have missed a few, but not lately.

You're welcome, and just an FYI: Your Body Control Module has self diagnostic capabilities built in. Click on the GM Service Manual link up top, then do a Number Search for Document ID: 604294 Body Control Module Diagnostic Information and Document ID: 604292 Diagnostic System Check - Body Control System for more info.

You'll still need a scan tool to check the air bag system for codes.

I've come to the conclusion that no matter what I eventually find as the reason(s) for my SRS light being on at all times, I'm first going to need to read (and reset) any codes that have been set by the Body Control Module, or SDM.

With that mentality, I went ahead and purchased a Craftsman CanOBD2 ABS+SRS Scan Tool # 25488
Craftsman ABS+SRS Scan Tool

I hope I'm purchasing the correct tool that will help to narrow down the problem area within the SRS system. I didn't expect to have to dish out this much money so soon after purchasing the car. But I look at it as an investment in a tool that I will never need to buy again. I'll post what code I find after I figure out how the darn thing works! I can already foresee asking you guys for some help as to what I'm looking at once I do read the code(s) :???:

I want one of those! Actually what I really want is a Tech II scanner but I won't be able to afford one anytime soon :(

Just wanted to post a update to purchasing the above Craftsman Scan Tool.

DON'T waste your time, or money if the sole purpose is trying to check for DTC's in the SRS, or ABS systems on a 2000 Grand Prix! Although the tool description states, "Will work with most 96-Up OBDII vehicles", when I went into the Enhanced Mode to check the SRS, I got the screen message, "This vehicle does not support viewing the SRS DTC". Same result when I gave it a shot with the ABS system. My take is this tool doesn't have the capability built into it to view the stored codes in the SDM, thus BAD advertising.

Anyway, just wanted to prevent anyone else in the future from wasting their time or money on this tool if their trying to track down the same kind of problem I'm having.

where are u from? Have the dealer scan it with the tech 2..The light will go off after you change whatever it is.. no reset needed on these cars

I've been to the Dealer to get a estimate on what it would cost to have them check for codes. To check for code(s), and diagnosis ONLY any problems they find, they quoted me a price of $130.00. I just can't see myself giving the dealer that kind of money and not getting any repairs performed for that price.

I'm starting to think after doing some more research that at some point before I purchased this car that it must have been in some kind of minor accident where it wasn't enough of an impact to inflate the air bags, but enough to set a code in the SDM, thus triggering the light in the IP to stay on. I can't find any signs of the car ever being in a accident, minor or major, so I'm not 100% on that theory. I guess my next move will be to take out the SDM and have it sent to the guy on eBay who is able to reset these things (myairbags.com) for $49.00. I'm pretty convinced that it also isn't the Clock Spring behind the steering wheel since my radio controls and horn work fine.

Are you sure the SDM resets itself if there aren't any problems left within the system? I'm still new to all this and still trying to learn, so I'm not questioning your statement. But I read while doing some searching on this problem that once a DTC is set in the SDM, the only way to clear it is to have the SDM "reset". Am I misinformed and have the wrong information??

By the way, I'm in the southern California area of the United States.

If its the clock spring the radio & horn will still work without problems.

It can only be the clock spring or the module.. Both are cheap parts.. Let me know what it was.
