I would have no clue and won't until you find out for sure. Only way to know for sure is to have it scanned at your local Autozone or Advance Auto Parts.

Did you recently get gas? Check your gas cap and make sure you have a tight seal. If you have a 10 year old car maybe getting a new one wouldn't be a bad idea.

Can we get a sticky put at the top that says something along the lines of 'if your SES light is on, we can't help you very much unless you have a description of what your car is doing and what the codes are'?

Not trying to be funny but the subject line says service engine light is on. I dont know what the code is. I have went to auto zone to get it scanned. I just went outside and toke off my gas cap and put it back on. The light went off. But Im still going to go to auto zone to get it scanned.

I meant no disrespect to you, but it was more mis-placed suggestion to the mods to put up a sticky asking people to please know what the code is when the SES light is on, because without that code, we can make simple guesses like the gas cap, but we can't make an educated guess at all. An SES can mean anything from your gas cap is loose to your motor is dead. The code is about all that'll tell us what the problem is.

Went to auto zone and got it scanned. I got the light to go off but want to check it anyway. And this is the code that came up

P0171 - Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 1

Dude tried to explain it to me but he didnt know what the hell he was talking about so I told him never mind.

Does anyone know were this comes from? And how do you fix it?

To provide the best possible combination of driveability, fuel economy, and emission control, a closed loop air/fuel metering system is used. While in closed loop, the PCM monitors the HO2S 1 signal and adjusts fuel delivery based upon the HO2S signal voltage. A change made to fuel delivery will be indicated by the long and short term fuel trim values which can be monitored with a scan tool. Ideal fuel trim values are around 0%; if the HO2S signals are indicating a lean condition the PCM will add fuel, resulting in fuel trim values above 0%. If a rich condition is detected, the fuel trim values will be below 0%, indicating that the PCM is reducing the amount of fuel delivered. If an excessively lean condition is detected, the PCM will set DTC P0171.

The PCM s maximum authority to control long term fuel trim allows a range between -23% and +16%. The PCM s maximum authority to control short term fuel trim allows a range between -11% and +20%. The PCM monitors fuel trim under various operating conditions (fuel trim cells) before determining the status of the fuel trim diagnostic. The fuel trim cells used to determine fuel trim are as follows:

* VIN K Idle, purge commanded (Cell 10).
* Deceleration, purge commanded (Cell 1).
* Normal driving, purge commanded (Cell 2).
* Normal driving, no purge commanded (Cell 6).
* Idle, no purge commanded (Cell 9).

* VIN 1 Idle, purge commanded (Cell 10).
* Normal driving, purge commanded (Cell 2).
* High flow driving, purge commanded (cell 4).
* Normal driving, no purge commanded (Cell 6).
* Idle, no purge commanded (Cell 9).

The vehicle may have to be operated in all of the above conditions before the PCM determines fuel trim status. The amount that fuel trim deviates from 0% in each cell and the amount that each cell is weighted directly affects whether or not the vehicle must be operated in all of the cells described above to complete the diagnostic.
Conditions for Running the DTC

* No VSS, TP sensor, EVAP system, HO2S, Misfire, IAT sensor, MAP sensor, Idle speed, Fuel Injector(s), IC/Bypass, EGR Pintle, EGR Flow, ECT sensor CKP sensor CMP sensor, or MAF sensor DTC(s) set.
* Engine coolant temperature between 20

This should help.

http://www.obd-codes.com/p0171

This could just be because your gas cap was loose.

Probably fixed it when you put the gas cap back on like already said.

179k miles..........How long have you owned the car?

An o2 code won't come on b/c of a gas cap...I would start by cleaning the MAF and then go straight to replacing the o2 sensor

Do you have any exhaust/vacuum leaks????

I have had the car since May 07. It has about 183 miles on it. the light keeps coming on and off. I dont know if its the o2 sensor or not. I was going to try and clean the MAF first.
