I have a 99 Hyundai Sonata GLS V6. This car is the meaning of the term "Slush box" Sometimes when I stand on it, I get some kick ass acceleration, but most of the time, it just revs really high and doesn't go. It's under 87,000 miles and I still owe $4,349. I found this today. What do you think?

It's a ridiculous listing, but the car looks good. The way they describe it, I would be cautious...it sounds like it's been ridden hard.

I have no doubt its been ridden hard lol. I have to dump washer fluid out of the sun roof with the Sonata, and, I was stuck in heavy traffic on the 405 one day, and it shut off. Wasent over heated, and drove really bad after I restarted it. After a 20 min sit off, I started it and has driven fine ever since, but those are the kind of gremlins that make me uneasy.

You don't want an SE. You want a GTP.

As long as you can find a 3.8 you're good!

Drive it and/or have someone familiar with cars take a look at it before you buy. GP's are pretty reliable, but they can have problems, just like any older/higher mileage car. How it's been treated will be the biggest factor in reliability, and a good test-drive and inspection can save you a lot of headaches down the road.

If it's been driven hard, the first thing to go will probably be the transmission. When you test drive it, take it up through the gears under both normal acceleration and WOT, making sure the shifts are smooth. Also, cruise at about 30 MPH, then floor it. You should get a downshift. You're looking to see if the transmission slips (engine revs, but the car doesn't go any faster).

Other than that, most of the problems you're likely to find are common to any nine year old / 148,000 mi car. There's a lot of good information here on the forum, and most repairs aren't too expensive if you're comfortable with a wrench. If not, you might consider asking an independent shop to do a pre-purchase inspection before you buy it. Any work that the car needs is always good for negotiating!

These really are great cars. If you do your homework before you buy, you can get a car that's cheap, fast, and reliable. Good luck!

(By the way, you really do want a GTP. If you get anything else, you'll regret it.)
