Hey everybody

I was driving the other day and my serpentine belt popped off. When i went under the hood I found out that my power steering pump pulley was out. Im new to the whole pulley thing so I was wondering should the pulley have a bolt in it when it comes out. Please help Here are pictures

I've seen that happen once before on here, see this thread: Awesome PS pump Carnage.

The pulley is pressed onto the shaft, and requires a power steering pulley remover tool and an installer tool, both of which you should be able to rent from your local auto parts store.
Looks something like this: Power Steering Pump Pulley Kit
Click on the GM Service Manual link, and search for Document ID: 294151 Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement

I'm wondering how would I resolve this problem. Will ill be able to just put it back in and use a pulley installer. Or do I really need a whole new power pump

Go to auto parts store. Rent pulley puller/installer. Buy new power steering pump.

Go fix the car and return the puller and the pump if you don't need it.

If you have a bench vise it would make swapping the pulley easier.

No, you need to replace the pump, and swap the pulley over. The threaded hole in the pump shaft is used to press on the pulley:

^^This screws into the pump shaft, then you use two wrenches, or a wrench and ratchet with a socket to press the pulley on, like so:

Sounds good, you could also try asking a local car repair shop to swap the pulley over for you. It never hurts to ask.. ;-)

quick question, Ive been idiotic and desperate and had to drive the car to a job interview w/o the belt. My car started overheating temp light came on for a few seconds and then I turned the car off never let it hit red. turn my car on and drove it around the complex for just a little bit and the car started overheating and smoking a little bit. Did I kcuf up my car from my own stupidity? does the belt power the water pump as well on a 1999 grand prix gtp 3.8L sc?

Quick answer: Yes it does.

Only time will tell if you messed up the engine or not, but you didn't do it any good.

Do not drive your car anymore without that belt on there!!!!! Or I will personally take that poor car off your hands. I always wanted a GTP
Not only is the W/P not turning thus overheating the engine within no time at all, the belt also turns the alternator so you're also prematurely killing your battery by running everything off of it and not recharging it when the engine is running. You might not have broken anything since these engine's are iron head, iron block, so the headgasket should be okay, but you might want to keep an eye on other parts of the engine.

If you didn't know what the accessory belt turns (even though there's a picture of what it powers in the engine bay), I wouldn't trust you to replace that P/S pump. Have it TOWED, do not drive it, to a shop which can actually replace that pump.

In, I want to see how this ends up. Good luck OP. Hopefully you don't have to replace too much.

It's hard to warp the iron heads but if you got it hot enough it could have happened, among other things. How hot did the car get?

First off, I doubt that you ruined your engine. Letting it overheat for a few seconds shouldn't seize it. However, like the others said: DON'T DRIVE IT UNTIL THE P/S PUMP AND BELT IS REPLACED!

Replacing the p/s pump is kind of a PITA (remove passenger wheel, etc) but less than an hour or two job for someone who's worked on cars. Most critical thing IMO is to cover the hose/tube as soon as they're disconnected (baggie, tie wrap) to keep engine crud from getting into the system. P/S pumps are around $55-75 if you DIY. Strange thing is you can buy one WITH the reservoir attached for less than buying one W/O the reservoir and having to put the old reservoir on. Also, many pumps come with the "pulley attachment" tool which is merely a bolt, nut and washer. In any case, it DOES sound like this job may be beyond your skills/expertise.
