does anyone know if an onstar system can be installed in my gp? i came across a wrecked impala and another one on a monte carlo that is also wrecked. and they have the onstar head units still on their mirrors. would this be just a matter of swapping mirrors and pay for a subscription for it or is it only intended for chevys?

There is a lot more to it than that. The control box in the trunk, an antenna, all the wiring, lots of fun stuff.

There is a lot of wiring that you would have to get, install, ect.. ect.. I'm sure you'd have to have to dealer do it too. It's not simple.

And no, it's not just for Chevys.

oh how nice. i should find one that has an onstar. subscriptions must be expensive for used vehicles though i bet, since newer vehicles they come free for one year (for what i heard) but the site read differently.

The cheapest is $19 / month (http://www.onstar.com/us_english/jsp/plans/index.jsp). I've subscribed to both plans (Safe and Sound and Directions and Connections) and personally, I find that the Safe and Sound coupled with my TomTom is better than the Directions and Connections (although, my GPS can't call and make dinner reservations for me :???:)

I thought about installing the OnStar system and pull from the datastream for an active GPS. But, that's a lot of work that I can leave to my Garmin Nuvi.

You can Dustin, but there's the issue of all those wires and a few holes in the carpet.

Good point, but that's way too much effort for me.
