Removed the intake manifold today and seen a pool of oil just sitting there on the manifold  . Where could this oil be coming from and what caused this to happen. I just purchased a new upper intake manifold kit and gaskets but im not exactly sure if that was the only probem because it seems like it was more oil then coolant,...it looked more like a thick sludge. I wanna fix this problem but just dont know where to start...is this new upper intake manifold/plenum the answer to all my problems? ....or is this pool of oil a deeper problem then what it seems...could one of my cylinder rings need replaced? All and any help would be deeply appreciated THANKS

Well from your description I would say not your piston rings. But I am having a hard time deciphering where this puddle actually is. Have / get a pic?

Also some preliminary items too, supercharged? Miles, are you changing the lower intake gaskets as well? Coolant in the oil ( pull the dip stick, not just what is Latin around and pooled up) , any oil in the coolant ( pull radiator cap.)

Those answers should get us on the right track to finding and fixing your issue. I suspect it is not as bad as you think but we will find it!

Ok let me start from the begining,...the ses light turns on and off somtimes, and when it turns on it stays on for about 3-5 days then turns off for a week or two then it turns back on again and when ever it is on it idles high at start any where from 2500 -3000rpms once the motors warms up a bit i can turn the car off then turn it right back up again an the idle will drop to 1000 and the will just start to climb and drop every few minutes...so we took it for a diagnostic and it came up random misfire , throttle body position sensor, idle air control sensor, mass air flow sensor, map sensor and a vacuum line,.... so i replaced all mentioned and still the problem continued so the other day i dic
Decided to remove the throttle body so that i could give it a thorough cleaning and ass soon as i remove the throttle body i just happened to peek into the upper manifold/plenum and noticed that every thing looked soaked in oil so i removed the manifold/plenum only to discover this pool of sludge....i pulled the dip stick oil seems low and looks to have mixed with coolant and the cars got 1373949 miles on it. Im also planing on changing the valve cover gaskets and the lower manifold gasket,....what could this problem be, does any body know

That oil build-up is normal. My 1997 L36 looked exactly the same when I went to install a HV3 many years ago.
The PCV system vents from the valve through that plastice tube you see lying on the Lower Intake Manifold in your picture.
Over time, the oil will pool in the LIM and actually cover one of the bolts you need to removed to take off the LIM.

And definitely replace those LIM gaskets. I replaced mine back in 2007 when I found coolant pooled on top of my engine in the pockets around the LIM.
If your '97 has gone this long without replacement, you need to do them ASAP.

the 01 looked liek that when i did the top swap

it is cuased by the PCV sucking in some oil when it vents the crank case intot hr intake. int he old days all that oil would be vented to atmosphere

PCV valve.

It happens, regardless if you put in a new valve.

BEST was to work with this on going problem with our cars is to run a catch can plumbed into the system. Nothing changed with the flow, you just direct it through the catch can in its cycle before it re enters the intake. The oil will seperate and stay in the can, and then you drain it out every oil change. Usually around a shot glass full at times.

I have designed a bolt on "cap" that goes onto the PCV cover on my M90 and has a in and out line on it. Just need to machine me a aluminum prototype, and plumb it all in. I have me a bad ass catch can already, its billet aluminum, and carbon fiber.
