if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck.... it's probably a duck.

So if you are losing oil, smelling oil, see if you can see any oil... and from where. Usually if you're smelling oil it's crank case blow by.... which usually escapes through a leaking valve cover or PVC or something of the sort that is a breather for the crank. Start looking mate, it's your best option at this point.

I'd bet money on rear valve cover too! Faint smell of oil just after startup once you start getting warm enough to burn off the oil that seeped out after you shut your car off.
If your car has an L67 it could be it had the front valve cover replaced for the recall but never got a new rear valve cover gasket. Seen that many times, you may be able to snug/tighten the cover down a bit to prevent the seepage but most likely it needs to be replaced. You can buy front or back gaskets individually from the dealer if you only need to do one.

I just change them both at the same time since IMO it's foolish to only replace one at a time anyway, so to me valve cover gasket = both sides

^ yeah not like you have a lot of "valve covers" under the motor.... I'd say we narrowed it down pretty well on our own. That's like saying your TPS light went off, so you know you have a low tire.... which one? Well you only have four, get out and take a look.... pretty simple =P

I have pics of valvecovers, but none of leaking rear ones
If you have a bunch of gunk and crap on the rear manifold, there's a good chance it's from an oil leak at the valve cover.

No recall that I'm aware of, Can be knocked out in 1-3 hours depending how fast you work. Parts were somewhere around/under 100 bucks I want to say. The dealer will bend you over. I want to say our local dealer charges somewhere around 500-700 bucks to do the job.

Best fix it sooner or later. You will eventually end up with oil in your coolant/large amounts a sludge and if you leave it go it could go the other way and you'll have a trashed motor.....

I get all my LIM stuff from shopgmparts.com. For LIM gaskets, UIM gasket, VC gaskets, injector orings, cooalnt elbows, everything comes to about 80-90 bucks shipped.
As has been said, it's really not that hard. If you can turn a wrench, you're fine. Just drain coolant, remove the tensioner bracket, fuel rail, throttle body, UIM, LIM, throw gaskets in, put it all back together. It's really an easy job actually. If you let it go though, the problem only get's worse and if it gets really bad you can be leaking coolant everywhere and if you're really unlucky, leak coolant into the lifter valley, which could then lead to a spun bearing.
No recalls for this. It's a known issue obviously, but GM fixed it with aluminum gaskets in 05, all owners of previous years just have to deal with it and fix it themselves.

The square hole in this pic is a coolant passage way. Still not sure to this day how it didn't leak coolant down into the lifter valley. It did leave ton of puddle ontop of the LIM though.

These will fix all your problems
