I have a 2000 GTP, 99000 miles. Recently my ignition began sticking in the ON position but I can remove the key. Of course, the steering wheel doesn't lock and the buzzer is really annoying when entering or exiting the car.

I've done quite a bit of research and it appears most GP owners have the opposite issue; i.e., the key is stuck in the ignition.

I've tried everything I can think of and can't seem to solve the problem. Before a month ago, it would happen rarely; now the ignition never goes to lock. Additionally, twice last week I jumped in the car to go to work only to find the battery was dead.

What's next? Replace the ignition cylinder and keys? The ignition switch? I'm at a loss as to what my next step should be. I'm a 55 y/o female who drives 70 miles R/T to work and needs to know my car is dependable.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! And, thank you!

Mine did that like a year and a half ago. There is a small hole with a cover over it under the steering column, pop off the cover and poke something in there to press the button and you can remove the key. I just jimmied something in there and put the cover back on so I don't have to worry about it. Correct fix? No. Does it work? For sure.

EDIT:
Misread your problem... maybe try pressing that switch when you're turning the key to remove and see if that solves it?

Tried that. Didn't help.

With the key removed, I can start the car; of course, it only runs for about 5 seconds or so. The issue is simply annoying.

Additionally, I've had problems with my A/C blower and read somewhere that it may be related? Has anyone else heard or know about this?

It sounds like you need a new ignition switch, yours is worn out.

^ This. It should be the neutral safetly switch or something.... I had an 00 with this problem.

Theres a writeup somewhere about it...

Until that gets found, heres some good ideas

Could be the shift lock solenoid preventing you from turning it to the lock position. Probably the ignition cylinder being why you can remove your key in the on position but I'm pretty sure your shift lock solenoid is out as well. That requires replacing the whole shifter unfortunately.

Thank you Everyone! I ended up zip-tying the brass button down inside the column. That seems to have done the trick. At least the "key-in-ignition" buzzer doesn't go off everytime I open the door and I can lock the steering column.

Again, THANK YOU! This forum is the best!
