I have a 2000 Grand Prix GTP, and due to rust and old age, the drain plug on the supercharger snout has been stripped while trying to change out the supercharger oil.

Anyone have personal experience on how to remove a stripped plug successfully without damaging the thread of the S/C? I know that there are stuff out there to remove stripped screws/bolts, but I have no personal experience.

Any thoughts will be helpful! Thanks in advance!

so by stripped do you mean the allen head is rounded out becuase the improper size was put in. or that the threads on the plug are stripped?

if its the first ummm try and cut a slit so you can use a blade screw driver to remove the plug?

As Mater asked, if it is the first you could also try to hammer a torx bit into it and see if you can get enough grip on the plug.
If it's the second, then you could Helicoil it, but I'm guessing it's the allen head of the plug that you're talking about.

I had a similar problem. Tried torx bit trick and it almost worked, then I got a welder....

A little overkill but it worked

we do that a lot in the dealer with rounded out torx and allen bolts. it takes less time and when you are working for flat rate.....

You need to buy a broken screw extractor set from Sears and a set of drill bits if you don't have any. Drill a hole in the center of the screw in the size that's recommended for the size screw extractor you are using. Then tap the screw extractor tightly into the hole with a hammer and use a tap handle on it to back the screw out.

For clarification, it's the allen head that has been rounded out due to rust. First, I'll try to make slots on the side to fit a screwdriver through. If that doesn't work, I will try to use one of those screw extractors from sears/home depot.

Just be careful not to get metal shavings in the S/C. I'm not sure how thick those plugs are but if you car drill a hole and not go all the way through that would probably be the safest option. Best of luck with your attempts. Stripped/seized/broken bolts/nuts/anything are never fun to deal with.

i'm gonna do matt's method when i replace mine
the fleamarket sells tools like crazy, so it should be easy to find the right allen or a smaller and get a friend to weld it

Just an update:

Trying to make a notch and using a flat screwdriver just made the problem worse. It kept stripping making the problem worse.

Went to Home Depot and purchased a "Grabit Pro - Pro-grade damaged Screw & Bolt Removal" made by Alden and used Grabit Pro #3 and it worked beautifully! I didn't have to "drill" the hole since it was so stripped, the "easy out" end fit into the stripped hole.

I've been using easyouts for 30+ years and they always work for me. When you do it for a living it's a lot easier to pull it off.

Last two I used, both of them broke. Threw the whole kit out..

Evidently the easyout you used was too small for the size of the broken screw your were trying to remove. If you use the proper size they won't break.

i work at a dealer in michigan we get a losot rounded off bolts and broken bolts do to rust.

he find it easeuer to just weld soemlthing to the ned of the bolt and remove it that way then fidleing withe easy outs that rarely work.

if i did not get paid flat rate i may use them more but getting the wleder out and welding something tot he bolt takes alot less time

Everyone doesn't have a welder and easyouts are MUCH cheaper to buy.

$50 will get you a POS welder. I'd say at least a couple hundred bucks for a good one since it doesn't pay to buy a cheap welder.

Sometimes there are good deals out there, you just have to be patient.
