I have a '98 gtp and just yesterday after i drove about 30 miles home from school i went to get back in it and go somewhere and started her up then she died. I checked with my local shop that installed my remote start and security and they said it shouldn't be either of those. I know there are quite a few things that could be the problem I just dont want to be spending a bunch of money to figure out which one it is. Anyone have a similar issue or might know the reasoning for this. Oh and yeah I do have a full tank lol

Try bypassing the fuel pump resistor, and see if it stays running: Fixing your intermittent stalling problem! If it doesn't work, try unplugging the MAF Sensor.

Thank you bending the tab on the relay to set the fuel pump speed to high mode got it to stay running. Does this mean I need to replace my fuel pump? Also is it safe to drive in this setting? because i did notice it smelled a bit more like gas after running it for a few minutes and i noticed when I shut the engine off there was kind of a quiet hissing sound like something cooling off not sure what it was.

Thanks again

You need to replace the fuel pump resistor: Fuel Pump Resistor - Supercharged 3800

You can get these from your local GM dealer as well, GM Part number 88951182. ShopGMParts sells it for $37.75 +shipping

There's also a plug-n-play wiring harness available that bypasses the resistor: Caspers Electronics Fuel Pump Hotwire Kit

Bending the relay tab is a temporary fix to get you up and running. Although I've known people who have bypassed it this way without issues, I would either replace the resistor or get the hotwire kit as soon as possible, just to play it safe.

Also, if you haven't replaced your fuel line and injector o-rings in a while, now's the time: Grand Prix FIRES? THE injector replacement o-ring write up with pic's

Huh, I had the same issue with a Crown Victoria today. The squad lights almost killed the battery too.

you will kill the fuel pump faster it was not designed to stay running at the high speeds all the time it will burn up sooner then it would nornaly

well i got 196k on my stock fuel pump so far and still going also the resistor went out at around 130k I believe maybe before that. Don't know how much more life it has in it, but is that considered sooner that normal? When is normal?

depnds on the car but it's still putting more strain on the pump then it was designed for.

it could vary well be you have a freak pump becuase i never had one last more then 130k aslo if you are not the first owner it could all ready have a pump replacement done

hey man, I had a similar issue check out my threads, in the end it was my fuel pump but it may seem familiar: 97-03-grand-prix-discussion-f13/help-stalling-issue-tried-many-fixes-t23594.html

My pump is 131,000 miles old... I'd be willing to bet it's original. Then again, I rarely drive my car anymore... :(

I have owned a couple miles my 98 s e the car had a boat 70,000 miles when we got it and we got rid of it at 180,000 and I never changed the fuel pump . As far as I could tell my 97 is the original pump and it still even at over 230,000 miles the only reason I changed it was because I went further than what it could handle anyway for the amount of mods I had done

Did you ever replace the pump in the 01? About 140,000 miles so far and pumping strong I will be sure to mention if it goes out

sent from my driod x, via my fingers through tapatalk
