Well we have been driving the 97 for a few months now and it has been running great, ties morning I drive it about 40 mile round trip and after I got home the wife went on a 30ish mile round trip, after she gets back my buddy that is here from florida jumps on it to go do some visiting and about 20 min later comes back in the house I am like wtf I thought you where leaving. He is like I did, and it wont go anymore. So he made it about a quarter mile from the house and it looks to be the trans has gone out. I need to do some more lookoing at it to be sure as I didn't have time before work today to figure it out. But it don't look good. On the plus side I do have a 97 GTP trans here. ( the same car that gave up it's motor for my 97) guess it will be time to rebuild it an do some wording and pcm swap and upgrade if to a better setup ( like the 01 has)

Guess it is time for both my GT's to have an HD trans in them that will hold up. As I plan to rebuild it similar to how the 01's trans is just without the extra good hard parts

i am going with the latter lol.

and yes i went a little over board with the trans in the 01 but i wanted to make sure it would last as a DD

97's are vacuum controlled you may just want to check for that issue too

Really? I thought they went electronic when they introduced the 3100.

I know my '96 is a 4T60E. Which, I might add, is slipping like all hell. From a 3100. Yeah.

The 97 GT's came with the 4T60E (ask me how I know... argh!!!!), but the GTP's came with the 4T65E.

There will not be much that tim, Zzp or any body else can do to help these stupid vac assist pos trans past the rebuild I had on this one to start with. There are no hard parts that will fit in them as things are just a little different (not that I would now, but I had bought them for it when I had the other motor in there and they will not work.)

I do however have the fix to the problem it will just take a little time to complete. I have the 97 GTP trans that came it of the same car that the motor is from and I will rebuild it swap the harness and pcm and basicly upgrade the car to the newer style and better trans and behind a basicly stock motor I will not worry about it any more!

Oh man, that would suck. Gotta say, I'm glad I have a 2001 after all the trans issues the 97 folks seem to have.

the 97 GTP does not have issues only the GT and SE

also if there was an issue witht he vacuum modulator it would go full pressure and shift like a jack hammer

i would highly recomend it. i have heard some ppl have had decent luck with them but they must dyno and then drive the car like a 95 year old man. cause most ppl have issues. and yes when you make boost it applys full line pressure also. but i have NEVER liked this trans. EVER. it has never shifted like i thought one should. if i would have know how many issues i was gonna have with this damn thing i would have just swapped the motor/trans/harness and computer when i put the motor in and be driving a basic 97 gtp. allthough i am considering if i want to pull the gears from the gt trans and put them in the gtp trans when i put it in. or just leave it for the littl better mpg's being it is a dd car running expensive ass fuel.

well what type of driving would you be doing more highway or in town?

in town the GT gears would be better. highway the GTP gears

Well I live in the country about like you do, and don't do too much "city" driving. So I am thinking just use the gtp gears. I don't really need the performance gains of them, besides it would give me spare gears for the 01

actualy it would be an upgrade. the 60 uses a single chain.

i actualy planned on putting in 60 gears in the 01's trans even bought the gear set from morads but ran out fo time at school. needed to drill and tap one of the gears so i could get the reluctor wheel on.

this is actualy what ZZP does for the 7/8 single chain becuase it is a 60 gear set lol

and yes where you live the GTP gears would be best. i plan on keeping the GTP gears when i have to rebuild the trans in the 00.
