ok, i know what you all are thinking... CV JOINT. but i am pretty sure thats not it. why? read.

i first noticed this clicking/repetetive squeaking when turning right. so i thought, maybe its a cv joint. it only happens when turning right, and it goes away when i go straight. makes sense. but then i noticed something else. the noise, which is quite loud and rather embarrassing , not only raises in pitch, but also in frequency (ie number of clicks/squeaks per second) in direct relationship to the engine rpm. i tested this by turning, then shifting the car into neutral, and revving the engine. it sounded exactly like when the car was in gear: when i gave it the gas, the noise clicked faster and higher pitched, which in my mind rules out the cv joint. the noise and the rhythm of the sound is very predictable, it happens every time and it only occurs when the car is in motion. so unfortunately i cant just pop the hood and rev the motor :(

has anyone experienced this?

help?

tensioner pulley makes sense... but did you even read my description lol?

if its the cv joint plz explain how the sound can relate to the engine rpm even when the car is not in gear

I am having something similar happen, it happens when I turn both right and left and sometimes I think I even can hear it when I am going straight. It is not the tie rod, ball joints, CV Boots, or CV shaft said my mechanic. He thinks it has something to do with the pulley and will have it checked out on monday. I don't know, I honestly think there is something wrong going on with the front CV but he said it wasn't it. Oh well I hope he can fix it up this monday.

I'd still have the ball joints, strut mounts, CV Boot, and tie rod checked out just in case. My 98 GP GTP had a bad tie rod on the front right side wheel and it used to make a noise too.

problem solved.

its in the starter, of all places. the gear that goes into the flywheel/flexplate, well it freely moves back and forth. so when the car turns one way, the centrifugal force pulls the gear toward the flexplate, but since its spinning the gear doesnt go in all the way. it just ticks. looking at the gear, the edges are worn off.

if i can remember, i'll get a pic for yall to see.... its pretty weird lol.

cant wait to get rid of that damned sound!

interesting that the fix would be a new starter solenoid. I had to replace my starter assembly as a whole due to the gear and housing around it breaking completely off. Could have been messy but luckily wasn't.

Please post some pics whenever you can. I will look into this because my car does almost the same thing and nobody has been able to find out what is the noise.

lol yes it is. it only took 3 different mechanics, myself, and my father to figure it out

Car parts with oil stains on them, my favorite! Nom nom nom nom.

Edit: Yeah that whole housing that surrounds the gear was what broke off on mine. I also got to see what wonderful treatment my flywheel had received from the previous owner. The teeth are a lot more worn than they should be. I always make sure to give at least 5 seconds between first and second starting attempts if what ever repair to the engine I just performed requires more than the normal single attempt to start it.

I know its been some time since this was posted, but i just wanted to say that my car had developed the same problem. I also thought it was the drive axle and changed it, and of course the noise was still there. I finally got around to the starter as i hope replacing it will solve the problem. It's kinda difficult trying to sell the car and not being able to explain to the people interested when they test drive the car. Anyway, i don't know what year and model car They has but mine is a 98 GTP (VIN 1) and the starter motors that they've equipped them with also develops this problem.
