today i was driving with the windows down, and i noticed a slight tick if i stepped on the gas. I have an 04 grand prix gt. Could it be a lifter sticking? I really dont know so any help is appreciated.

Could it be an exhaust leak?

You will hear lifter tick in these cars and is not uncommon since we use a lighter weight oil than the previous gen. I hear it in mine at idle and around 2k RPM's. It is fine.

My advice keep driving till something falls off and the noise ceases and is replace by a worse one then u will know where the problem is. if you still cant find the source of the problem repeat this step as many times as necessary to fin the problem. then profit.

You *could* try the old vacuum hose trick.
Put one end up to your ear and listen for your "tick" with the other end.

most times things are cheaper fixed when starting to go bad . . . like wheel bearing going bad. fix it . . like 60 bucks. let it go, its welded itself to the hub. now you get to replace a hell of alot more. you might actually have to buy the hub from the stealership

so if i wanted to make the tick stop could i run heavier oil for the summer, or would that be a bad idea?

I had that problem fixed with mine... it ended up willing my control arm being loose or something (had it done at the stealership). I tightened up things there and nothing.. I guess it was something I over looked.

Are you sure the Tick noise is coming from the engine? If it is only happening while driving and not in Neutral or Park then its possible to be something along the drive-train. I had a ticking noise awhile ago that I swore was my brake pads - Came to find out it was bearing. Check to see if the tick noise stops when you apply the brake and also check if the tick noise increases with small amounts of acceleration.

maybe a bad trans mount leading to some parts hitting one another when trans shifts gears? Its clearly nothing in the suspension, right?

its not in the suspension, but its really weird because now it starts to do it a lot more, but i have to really listen for it because the cai makes so much noise.

I wish I could find the post but someone else also had a ticking issue and came to find out is was the small wheel inside the starter. If im not mistaken it was loose and was ticking against the converter plate ( spinning against the teeth ).

damn thats strange. is the trans acting up or anything, shifting funny? I would think an exhaust leak or some sort of a bearing going out, either a load bearing for one of the front struts or a wheel bearing in one of the wheel hubs....keep us informed, you've got me perplexed.lol

While in park put ur foot on the brake shift into drive. Maintaining brake pressure apply pressure to the accelerator. Do you hear it still? If so find another person to do this while you listen under tye hood.

Id say if everything seeems to be acting ok..all the fluids are in good shape and full. And a good visual inspection was done I wouldn't worry to much about it at this point.

I forget what the precise symptoms of a cracked flexplate are. If you suspect a lifter tick, run 10w30 oil. You'll find out real quick if that is the concern. In the summer, 10w30 will be JUST fine, despite the L32/L26 calling for 5w30.

Im running 10w40 in my L36 for the summer. Down here in Florida things heat up really high and in the winter I use 10w30. It now has well over 200,000 miles on the original engine and its never been apart and no ticks. I use 50/50 synthetic blend oil.

Still sounds like an exhaust leak to me...

Find a mechanic near you that will do a free estimate, so if nothing else, you know what is wrong with the car...
