I've managed to obtain a brand new, and I'm talking zero hours, no miles block, heads, pistons, crank, and valvetrain, for a $50 donation!
My plan is to build an all motor, no boost, NA engine to produce 325HP at the wheels and still keep considerable economy and reliability. You guys think it can be done?
Lend me some thoughts and tips.

I wonder how many hp one can achieve without boost or nos on these engines.

I've got all the pieces, my good buddy is a journeyman machinist, I'm a mechanic, And another one of my friends is an instructor in college that has access to a dyno and he does tuning as well. The engine is going in my 04 GT.

Although this would be cool, and unique, I don't see this happening(unless your loaded with cash).

I remember hearing someone with a 97-03 GT had a cam, and many other supporting mods yet couldn't even get over 200whp. For what it is worth you are MUCH better off putting that money into turbo/supercharged. You could have a reliable turbo/supercharged car if you spent same amount trying to get a N/A over 300whp.

So this is going to be a real challenge then.... I used to run the CT Precision kit on my old engine, without very many supporting mods other than meth and a shift kit, and so the motor cratered. I'd love to run a turbo again but unfortunately I sold the kit. I just figured this would be worth a try since it would be cheap for me to do considering the resources and connections I have right now. And if I were to go Turbo again, I'd probably end up assembling my own setup (cuz it might end up being cheaper than a kit-out-of-the-box).

325 whp is a lofty goal but with a deep pocket it might be doable. Maybe port and polish the heads, shave the heads to bump up compression, port and polish the LIM and of course something with the UIM (HVIII or something custom maybe). Of course you'd need all the other mods like intake and probably some sort of bigger TB (if there even is such a thing for the drive by wire cars), exhaust, a crazy aggressive tune and aggressive cam, bigger injectors maybe, and with that sort of power headers would do more good than harm. Also deleting you're A/C would give you a litte extra HP and putting underpulleys on the other accessories should help a little too (every little bit adds up). If you really wanted to go all out, bore out the block and make that bad boy a 4.0 or something bigger, but then the piston and crap would be a pain to acquire or impossible. I'd love to see a 300+ whp N/A motor but keeping it reliable or even a DD would just be a hassle.

BTW, remember that roughly 20% of your power lose is due to the trans, so you could be super awesome and do a manual trans and your power lose from the crank to the wheels will be a lot less.

Heck I've seen people mod thier 2.8L VR6 motors and get around 300 whp without NOS or forced induction but the engine is driven about a total of 100 miles a year (i.e. taken to shows and parked or put on a dyno). But if some crazy VW guys can do it, at least one pontiac guy can pull it off and hopefully make it reliable.

Very juicy tips. Thanks. The only problem I see is boring these blocks. There is very little meat left to take off, I've heard of some guys only getting a .010 overbore out of these things before the cylinder walls got wavy. My LIM is being ported and polished this week, I've got a front P-log already but should probably think about headers in the future. Now, this project isn't going to come together in a month, but more like 6. I also want this thing to be streetable so maybe my 325hp goal is a bit high.... I'm honestly starting to think that maybe turbo again would be better and perhaps safer?
It would be incredibly badass to have a 5 speed manual in these cars, and I saw a video of a couple guys who did that to an 01 GT. Looks like a ton of work, but sooo sweet. Well I'm gonna keep on digging up some information on how to make this possible... I'll keep things posted and pics too when I get started.

It can be done it is just going to cost a little more. I suggest the stroker kit from swans racing it will turn the 3800 into a 4.2 it comes with crank, and rods. Also I would look into getting higher compression pistions, heads, a very large cam, larger injectors ( stock GTP injectors will do), HV3 and a really good tune.

It will be nice to at least have an engine out of the car to work on so that always makes things easier. Milestone's suggestions are pretty solid. In the words of Borat "Very Nice".
