Is it possible to replace just the gauge sending unit on the fuel pump? instead of replacing the whole pump? and if so, how do you do it?

a couple years ago, the sending unit crapped out on my fuel pump, so i replaced it with a used pump. i kept the old pump incase i ever needed it. well the pump i put in died last week, so i threw the old pump in. i'd like to take the sending unit off the pump that just died and put it on the pump i just put in, instead of getting another pump. its a 2000 gp

I helped my Dad change a pump on a truck and I remember taking the entire unit apart, so i THINK you can....

I don't think you can order that separately through any parts stores. A dealer, probably. Call Bergstrom, they have better prices than Gustman ANY day. (since you're in Appleton...)

I don't want to order one, I want to remove it from the pump that was in my car. If no one knows how or if it's not possible, I'll pick up another used one.

I might be wrong about this but I think the sending unit tells your how much gas is in your tank, if this is so, pull out the good pump and take an eraser to the part of it where it moves across the resistance screen, also you should get some type of fuel system cleaner. Basically the resistance thing gets dirty from the gas and then you have to clean or replace, also if you email me at bumpj5@yahoo.com, i can most likely get you instructions on what you are trying to do.

On most GM sending units you can take them apart. I have done it on a few, but I don't know for sure about our cars. I am almost positive that you can, and I would say go for it.

Yeah, on my Cutty, you can. I have to assume that since Intense and ZZP sell JUST a fuel pump, that they do come apart. You can't buy them separate from a parts store, but if you have known good stuff, yeah, you can pull them apart, and swap out the bad for the good.

No the gp pumps can't be taken apart to change only the pumps I just had one go out in my 02 and installed a pump out of an 03 impy but you can take the sender off the pump and change it over.

i got a friend with a 97 se 3800 and his car is saying its always full, and we thought it was the gauge so i put my 2000 gtp gauge cluster in and it read empty. so i told him go buy one from the junkyard. he did and told me its doing the same thing as the original 1. so is the fuel float bad or is it something else?

It is the sending unit on his fuel pump in the tank. You may be able to clean it, but a replacement would be the best bet.
