Did you go out for Mexican food the night before?

It would be easier if we knew what it smells like, and where it's coming from. If it's enough that he could smell it in another car as you passed him, you should be able to smell something at idle. I'd let the car warm up, then start sniffing.

The cat will smell like chicken (I assume, since I've heard they taste like chicken), and will probably be cooking somewhere on the exhaust (I'm sorry, I couldn't resist). A bad catalytic converter will smell like rotten eggs, and will be coming from the exhaust.

If it's in the engine bay, just start looking for leaks or residue from leaks. I'm leaning towards the cat, since anything in the engine bay would probably be carried into the passenger compartment, and you'd smell it before someone outside the car did.
