So ive noticed my motor is running extremely cold over the past few weeks. cruising on the highway @ 70 im sitting at the first red dash, or one notch above it, constantly. in stop and go traffic i might get to 1/2 way if im just not moving.

im curious as to what has caused this, my theory is its a combination of the cone filter in place of the stock airbox and the cold ambient temps, but then again thats just a theory.

I would also like to know if im damaging the motor in anyway with it staying so cold for extended periods of time.

Most newer stats are designed to stick open when they fail vs. old ones would hold up and your car would over heat. Change the stat and I'll bet your golden!

Luda - I have a cone filter, and a 180 stat, and my car gets up to the first dash above the bottom.. that's it.

Had the same problem with my '95 Park Ave last winter; took over 10 minutes to warm up, and ran cold on the highway. Single digit temps made it even worse...changed the Tstat, and the engine warms up in less than five minutes now.

Mines been running quite cold this winter too. Can't remember the exact mark but its not normal operating temp. Maybe i should look into this as well. Hope the T-stat fixes your problem man.

You guys and your "marks"...
My AeroForce says I'm at 179*

I tend to think they hit the nail on the head,...
Start with the T-stat, it's a cheap & easy start & can't hurt to change it anyway
Get a 180, don't get the "drilled" one...

Looks "normal" to me,...
(Reads, "not cold")

Not attacking you here, but the car runs great, I have no SES Light, & my head gets hot enough to burn my hand if I leave it on the vent...

I guess I just don't get what you mean by "cold"

ahhh.. When I put my regular stat in, and I drive around, my needle would be above half..

I mean it runs "colder" I guess.. for mine anyway. It's a noticeable difference in the heat that blows from the vents.

OP - how "cold" do you mean?

That's exactly where mine runs with a 180 Stat

Could a bad thermostat cause the car to not start?

My sister has an 04 GT and her car has a hard time starting...she has to give it gas to get it to idle properly...and when you shut it down the engine has a very loud hiss.

She took it in today for that and a check engine light....the code they pulled said that the thermostat was bad...so they changed it and charged her 112 dollars...

No. A bad thermostat will not cause the engine to not start. If the engine is warmed up, and the idle speed is too low for the coolant temp, that can cause some trouble, but that would be in the PCM or the IAC motor.

a bad t stat would either overheat the motor, or over cool it (depending on if the tstat whent out in the closed or open position respectivly)

and now that we've hit the hot part summer here in NOVA the temp gauge is favoring the mark above the center line, and if i really dog it for a few minutes it goes to the second notch, looks like ill be doing the fan switch mod here soon

There is a code for it. I forget, something like a P0118? Coolant temp below threshold or some shit like that. I got it a few times.

I have a theory, check to see if your fans are running at such a low temp. A/c and heater off, start the engine cold and see if the cooling fans turn on. You could have a relay contact that broke off or burnt onto its corresponding contact. Just a theory, but if your fans are running 24/7 and you have a 180 tstat then your engine never get warmed up.

Does it blow hot air? If so coolant temp sensor busted?
