Depends on what cam you use and if you order supporting things such as valve springs retainers ect... This was a pretty intense installation for me and took a lot of time and meticulous work to complete. The cam installation is pretty scary haha I dropped the cradle and lowered the engine down to snake the cam in thru the fenderwell....

You need lifters for certain, no matter what cam you go with. Then from there, depends on the cam among other things. :)

I did not get new lifters.

I (personally) will be getting new lifters. The old ones already have a wear pattern from where the lobe of the cam runs and that wear on a new cam will prematurely wear the new cam's lobes down vs. new lifters to new cam.

I hear where your coming from no doubt. If I had more money or went with a more aggressive cam I wouldve done lifters too (went with vs cam)... My friend that helped me asked if I needed new ones and when I told him I did not he was surprised. So when it came time to take the lifters out I inspected them pretty thoroughly and didn't see any noticeable wear to them nor was there like a pattern on the cam lobes. I would have loved to do everything new, but I did the cam and supercharger install all in one so I was pretty strapped for cash. I did springs retainers cam timing chain and timing dampener. About 800 dollars worth of stuff for the cam I think.

I understand! Stuff costs too much cash for sure! LOL! I was gonna go the supercharger and cam route but it's just gonna cost too much so I'm just going to go with the cam... waiting for the warranty to die first... and since I don't put many miles on the car since it mostly sits in the driveway that might take a while (as soon as I get the money together I might just say screw the warranty...LOL. So far they haven't covered stuff under warranty that's supposed to be anyhow!)

Then I may as well just save money to get a transmission too. LOL. I plan on keeping this car as long as possible. It's the only car I can say I love more every year that goes by.

Okay. Well I'll be still about it from here on out. All I'm saying is that you can't see wear on lifters... and while I agree there are other things you need besides lifters, you also need those. It will work okay for a while... but you're not going to get the life out of the cam that you would have gotten otherwise. $159 is good insurance to make sure you don't have to do it all over again, IMHO.

Call any reputable performance engine builder... they will tell you when they replace a cam, they use new lifters. You can put new lifters on a used cam, but not the other way around. The lifters are worn a certain way from the old cam... put a new cam in with the old lifters, and like I said, it's gonna be powerful and fine for a while, but eventually it's gonna wear on it.

I'll shut up now and leave this thread alone.

Not flaming you guys who have done it, I'm just saying...

If you don't believe me, here's a link for ya from a camshaft manufacturer:

I think as long as you don't have super high miles on these cars it will be fine with the old lifters. In that article when they talk about new lifters they are discussing flat tappet cams not hydraulic rollers which is what our cams are I think. Again like I said I wish I got new lifters too but I believe I will be ok. I still get my cam warranty because I used new springs and they actually mention in the comp cam guide that it is ok to use old lifters on our type of cams. Also there a lot of oil to lubricate the lifters so I dunno...
