You could always just modify the stock box.
I would stay away from oil/gauze style filters though.

According to what I read earlier today on a Ford truck site,Blackstone said the K&N's were the worst of the lot for letting in contaminants.
Apparently Cummings has only approved two aftermarket filters for their diesels....Amsoil Microfiber and one Oil/Cotton gauze filter.............NOT K&N [I forget the name].

Logic applies here...if it flows, it doesn't filter. If it filters, it doesn't flow. Find a balance.

I'm going to disagree with that [surprise! ].
I have flowed the stock style panels - K&N & stock paper - mounted in the lid on a Super Flow 1020 bench.
They both flowed just around 1,000 CFM,yet the paper filters better in testing.

Well, generally speaking, I meant. It HAS to flow a certain amount for it to be considered for engine use. If you had one that flowed 1500CFM, I can just about guarantee that it won't filter for shit.

I understand where you're coming from and it is "general wisdom" - when you speak in terms of conventional filtering technology.
What really matters is the inlet size [at the base of a cone filter].
Here's what I saw:

Three,four inch inlet filters.
They varied in length from 6.5" to 10".
Their CFM flows went from 1045-1075 CFM......HUH?
That's a big difference in the lengths.

So we tested a 3" inlet , 9"" long.
It flowed 875 CFM.

The fun part was watching the filters "break in" when you first start flowing them.
They actually start about 200 CFM low and then slowly climb to their max.
These were all oil/cotton gauze filters.
The way Sean explained it was that the filters have to "break in".
What seems to matter is the inlet size more so than the amount of filtering area.
Obviously more filter means more dirt can be "absorbed" before cleaning, but other than that.........
