Fairly new to the site and just wanted to get some input from you guys on what oil you would put in 04 GP gt2 with 125,000 miles as far as brand, synthetic or conventional, high mileage? I know how to change oil and know better to use 5w30 for the this engine. I bought the car a month ago from a dealer and have no clue what the previous owners used for oil other that it was Citgo oil - according to oil expiration sticker on the windshield. I never even noticed that citgo sold engine oil lol! As far as oil filters, I'll probably stick with using Wix oil filters, they make a quality filter that I've used in the past. Ac delco oil filters aren't what they used to be from what I've heard. Glad to see the oil filter is in good location on the 3800 unlike the 3400 which I'm unfortunately familiar with.... Any input would be appreciated

I'm a firm believer in anything synthetic. In the 97 and in my old 04 I ran Mobile 1 and everything is still kosher on both. 155k miles on the 97 and 110k on the 04. I run Valvoline Synpower in my VW and it is also fine even though the oil temp gets a hot as the sun at times. I don't really prefer Mobile 1 or Valvoline, it's just what each respective car has run for years so I never changed the routine ;-)

Good choice with Wix filters though. Just don't touch Fram... hot lava but I'm sure you knew that already

And sorry to hear about your familiarity with the 60degreeV's. I feel your pain. Just don't let Pat (Palsut) know about it since he's a 3100 hugger

I use valvoline synthetic blend, and either a napa, or wix filter.

I just rolled over 100K on my '05 and I've run Mobil 1 syn high mileage since I started using synthetic in it a couple years ago. Not sure about all the "high mileage" hype but at the same price as the regular synthetic, it works just fine for me.

On newer stuff I typically use Valvoline Max-Life if it has over 75k miles. Hasn't let me down yet. The only thing I've used conventional on is the 73 because I don't know if it still has the old style cork oil pan gasket. Once I have a chance to change the oil pan gasket then I'll switch to synthetic.

You can't go wrong with any synthetic. I typicaly pick up mobil 1 when it's on sale at autozone or oreilly with a filter. I would not recommend royal purple with all that I have been reading online.

This should help you in making your decision on an oil filter.

I will be going with amsoil on the next oil change.

Thanks everyone for your input so far. I'll probably go with Mobil 1 or Valvoline. Haven't decided yet weather to go with high mileage oil, not sure if its really necessary.

Great links. Very shocked to see that Fram Xtended Guard scored the highest  The ACDelco scored pretty bad

Yeah lol. I have a 3.4L 2003 Impala with 147,000 miles. Engine has leaking intake manifold leak for the second time since I bought it at 95,000 miles. Had leaking intake manifold gaskets replaced with Fel pros at 100k miles so I'm surprised they're leaking already... or am I? Engine has some wicked valve train noise that started progressively getting louder since 10,000 miles ago, probably a rocker arm or lifter. I was using Valvoline Max Life when the problem arose but I don't think that had anything to do with it. Also transmission needs a rebuild from pressure control solenoid going unfixed for too long. I can't knock on the 3400 too bad with the exception of the infamous intake manifold leaks. I think the previous owners were hard on the car and didn't maintain the car well. Car ran hot for awhile because of the coolant leak which probably wasn't good for tranny either. Cat had to get replaced later as a result from burning coolant earlier (very expensive if you go with the gm cat). Missed the boat on the Dex-cool class action lawsuit. Also missed the extended warranty on the cat converter by a 1000 miles when gm extended the warranty to 120,000.
Glad I have the bullet proof 3800 now. Although, believe me when I say I'll be constantly keeping close tabs on the intake gaskets and coolant level and condition.

Ouch, that does suck. Hopefully the 3800 treats you better. But yeah, just keep an eye on those LIM's and that engine should be good to you.
