Good evening guys,

Now I know that all GP's have the traditional "whining" sound which Ive come to love, but for the past few days it's been extremely loud. Louder than a supercharged whine which I can't imagine is good since my gp is only a gt2. Any idea why its so loud? It sounds like driving a golf cart down a steep hill (for all you golfers out there).

Im gettin a lot of head turners but Im not sure its a good thing.

Cheers!

I just changed my s/c belt due to a very high pitch whine that would happen at 95 mph +. Yes I did read what model go gp you have. But it could be your drive belt.

Belt slip is possible! and is common, Gatorback belts are prefect to stop this.

Like the golf cart translation lol, May also be the Power steering pump, or the alt, Either one is known to cause whine. I would check the fluid for your power steering pump first, if that is clear check the alt. Now the alt will have a high pitched whine and the Power steering pump will have a consistent and lower pitched whine. Also test the pump with the car parked and running, and remove the power steering cap, if the whine becomes louder or goes away its the power steering pump.

Yeah, I have to believe it is the PS pump. BTW, don't use Gatorback belts. They suck...having less contact area than a regular belt. Gates is as good as they get.

I had some whine before that was caused by a idler pulley going bad.

Just an update here,

Since I'm an 18 year old broke ass, I tested my luck for a few days and well, it's not happening anymore. Im assuming this is good haha.

If it happens again then I'll check everything.

Thanks guys

Hey guys,

It's back.

Just to clear something up, if it were the powersteering pump/fluid level, wouldn't it whine louder when I turn?

It gets louder when I give it more gas, so could it be something other than the powersteering? Cause to me it doesn't make sense for it to be the powersteering when I give it more gas, and the louder it gets. Or does it?

HAALLP!!!

For me i think it would happen under acceleration. Just let the car cool over night reach back behind the engine the next morning and check ur levels. if the fluid is low buy a bottle for 3 bucks at auto zone top it off and see what hapens. If the problem persists see about mabe perhaps belts. But i dont know any thing about belts myself.

I'm with Victor here. Idler pulley and new belt. I had to replace mine not too long along cuz of the whining from the engine bay. Try to see if it's only the belt first, if it still makes the sound.. Get the pulley.

UPDATE

Hey guys,

I just spent tonight checking the fluid levels, and it turns out I had virtually NO power steering fluid. After wiping and inserting the dipstick, it was still completely dry. Brilliant placement on the reservoir by the way, had to take out my engine coolant tank to get at it, which was another bonus cause I was empty there too (it leaks into the engine unfortunately) so I topped them both up, took it for a quick spin and it looked promising.

I'll keep ya guys posted, and thanks for the suggestions!!

Cheers!

coolant leaking into your engine?? im pretty sure thats a sign of a blown head gasket..someone more knowledgeable can chime in and correct me if im wrong...you should probably get on fixing that

You're absolutely right. The headgasket is blown and has been for about 40,000 kms now. Im a broke ass and my dad doesn't think its worth it for my car - having to disassemble the engine to change a simple gasket and risk breaking something else (im not very experienced with cars yet but I want to learn, but I can't risk destroying my car) and it would be a $$$$ load to get it done in a shop. It's basically fixing everything that I am capable with, and praying that nothing serious breaks down on me lol.

If you don't fix that headgasket asap you are going to have a nice looking paper weight on your hands.

Mine was whining terribly, especially when I would crank my wheels at idle/low rpms, so I replaced my power steering pump for 40 bucks (used) and that solved it. This was around only 70,000 miles too, idk how long they should last...

Mine also was low power steering fluid. They put that reservoir in the worst place possible. Sucks.

mine did it, sounds pretty neat sometimes lol, makes alot of people think its a gtp. but its 100% powersteering, mine did it most when turning sharp under throttle, and it was actually a way louder noise then the car, sometimes over the radio half way up if i had turned under heavy throttle. as for taking out the engine coolant tank? why? just get a funnel and rubber hose, pop the cap off n fill er up. i used lucas fluid with conditioners, and honestly it seems like it turns alot smoother and easier then when i got the car with 36k miles on it. i started getting the noise at 60k, topped off fluid, im sitting at 70k now and still no sound back.

It is almost certainly not the Head Gasket! Much more likely the Lower Intake Gasket, which is much cheaper to repair!

I'd bet a dollar on this. If you had a blown head gasket the car wouldn't be running after 40K miles.
