Does anyone else get some sort of top-end noise on cold starts? It's gone once I reach operating temp, but it's still unsettling to me. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, is there an easy fix (by easy I mean not a full rebuild)

The lifter tick at cold start? That what you mean? My 3.1 MPFI Cutlass Supreme had that issue. I don't know that there was a good fix, maybe new lifters? Thicker oil? That's all I got...

yeah but it settles down once it warms up then its at like 600 at idle. but again it only does that after its been sitting for 24 hours or more, also the gear shift tend to take a little effort to move out of park the first time after its been sitting that long. like it does if i just put it in park and let it roll back on its gears.

The 60* engines are notorious for piston slap as well. Lifter tick isn't uncommon, either.

I hate to tell ya, but I don't think there's a permanent solution. My advice is try a slightly thicker oil, perhaps a non-diesel 15W40 in the summer, 10W40 in winter. I'd wait to see if someone else has anything to say about that idea...

You can replace the lifters to help the lifter tick. For the piston slap, GM has a TSB out there that relates to it, and they have SLIGHTLY oversized pistons or rings, or both...I can't remember. Either way, it is an expensive proposition. Neither concern REALLY is detrimental to engine life. I've heard 3.1 MPFI engines that sounded like a diesel...and ran fine like that for over 100,000 miles.
