In the last week the shop my dad works at has worked on a 3100 (105,xxx mi) and a 3400 (124,xxx mi) in a case were the bolt that holds the rocker down has pulled out of the head..due to the weak aluminum threads and pressure of the valve spring..

Never heard of that, or seen it. Not sure how it could happen, unless at some point, the rockers were overtorqued. Since you have to pull the pushrods to do the LIM gasket, that is entirely plausible.

No. If that were the case, there'd be more cases of this, I'm sure. Even on the 60* boards, nobody has ever mentioned anything like this. I'm gonna go with overtightened rockers. They only take 25ft lb of torque, so overtightening would be easy.

Just a heads up, there's a tool available that makes those 3100 and 3400 LIM gasket jobs much easier: Lisle LIS48500 Push Rod Remover

The problem is beleived to be fr people not changing there oli frequently enough and sludge builds up in the lifters and causing them to not be as forgiving between the cam lobe and the rocker arm, which is graudually weaking the threads in the head causing the bolt to pull out

I dont know the cause behind it but i have helicoiled and fixed LOT of 3400s with that prolem. My 05 Grand am gt did it just over 100k and i babied that car, ran nothing but synthetic oil changed every 5k. Snap on sells a drill bit and a tap just for those, its pretty easy to fix, although the backside of the block is a pain to get to if your doing it while still in the vehicle, but a big pry bar and a chain makes it a little easier.

hmm have not seen that just got done practicly rebuilding a 3400 from a montana after the owner let it over heat.... "only once"...... *cough*many times*cough

got the rocker cover off and the head was filled with this sludge that looked like caramel. so pulled the engine and cleaned it all out the LIM gasket went out and going into the intake runners and loosing coolant and was over heating. surprising ly the rocker stugs where fine even though the van had 153,000 miles

The helicoil holds up real good my grand am has 212k on it now and my mom drives it now. She hasn't had any issues since I gave it to her.
