My 16 year old has a 1997 SE that is overheating and leaking coolant. The cooling fans are not working , so I assume that the is major factor. The fans worked when we put freon in the A/C system, but it also has a leak and was out of freon within a day. ( are the low pressure and cooling fans tied together ? ) We want to replace the thermostat also. Does anyone have a link to pictures on how to locate and replace t-stat? I see where the upper hose connects to engine , but don't really see t-stat housing. Is it further back from brass bleed screw? Thanks in advance. Karl

When you runs your A/C on it kicks the fan on to help pull air across the condenser to cool the A/C. Have you tried replacing the relays for the fans? After that try the temp. sensor, then the fan switch, or you can hard-wire them to runn full-time with the key on. Follow the upper radiator hose to find the T-Stat housing, keep going until you find 2 nuts (or bolts) the hold it on, remove those, remove old t-stat, install new, reverse procedure, and check about bleeding the coolant system of snd and all air. Also soure your leak anf ix A.S.A.P. or your just wasting your time.

Thanks Dane. I found t-stat under throttle body. Hard to get to. Gonna take more time than I have tonight. Tried relay before and that wasn't it. But did jump relays and fans worked so I know motors are good. Where is temp. sensor located and how would we hard wire?

Well you can hardwire one of 2 ways, find a keyed source under the hood to tap into, or run a switch inside and wire it up like you would anything else.

I have no idea where the temp sensor would be, ahve you searched for any re-pair manuals?

Even looking at one for a Grand Am or something else with the 3100SFI will point in the right direction. If I had my rothers car here I could help you out more, but I dont, I'm working from memory.

The crossover too? I know the plenum has to come out since the throttle body and plenum are one piece. But if I remember right, the crossover doesn't interfere with the t-stat housing... though I haven't looked at my t-stat housing in a while.
