hey guys my friend is offering me his 1995 GTP for 1400 bucks.
it looks almost mint on the exterior the interior needs a little shampooing but no major tears or any significant damage for that part.

it has trouble idleing when it sets for a while. and it smells as if its running rich.
would these two factors be coincidence or would they both be a contributing factor.

what would you look at first to solve the idle issue. ( it has NEW plugs)

so you think that could cause its restriction to idle? it starts just fine and then dies, over and over then give it a lil gas to let it warm or something to that nature and she is just fine.

LQ1's are non-interference motors. If the timing belt snaps only way valves will kiss the pistons would be if you were near redline.

most likely no..
any ses light?
good places to start trouble shooting would be emissions system for example pcv valve, vacuum leaks fuel regulator etc
also search here for a seafoam write up to preform treatment through a vacuum line...I would recomend starting with that

They are very finicky motors. If you do proper maintenance on them they will be fine, but how many people with Grand Prix's actually do that?

Nevermind that doing the timing belt on them can be a total bitch from what I've heard. I know to have it done you can expect to pay $1200+

one thing pretty simple you could try is taking the throttle body of and cleaning it out really well with some TB cleaner. I have the 3.4 version, and it made a world of difference for me.

Wrong 3.4 though. The one in the GTP's is the DOHC 3.4, not pushrod one. Just giving you a hard time.
However, cleaning the TB, IAC and all that jazz could help out indeed.
If it's having trouble holding idle after it's warm, then it could be an 02 or MAF sensor, but if it's having trouble holding idle at first start then it's probably not either of those 2 things.
I'm not really familiar with the LQ1, sorry.

I'm not entirely familiar with the LQWin, but idle issues make me think vacuum leak. If that doesn't work IIRC ICM's are the same from the LQ1 to the 3100/3800's, you could try swapping it and the coils. Cleaning TB and IAC are also good ideas.

Haha, truth. The oldest person in this thread is 21 (unless the OP is older) so we don't know anything

Check the fuel filter as well. I can't tell you how many people have overlooked something like that. But vacuum leak is definitely a real possibility (and probably more likely). Just wanna cover all bases though. And I'm older than 21 (Mike still has me beat though)
