I saw the recent post about TC and ABS but I'm not sure it applies. Figured I'd throw out opinions for the night. Tonight i started getting constant traction control and stability control off warnings accompanied by the ABS light. There's a possibility that I did some damage running over a traffic cone (kicked in front of me by someone else hitting it) but I didn't see any damage. Where should I be looking and for what? It should be noted that this did not happen in conjunction with hitting the cone, just the same night. As always TIA.

I'm also noticing that my power steering is a lot stiffer. It's not out, but the steering is definitely not as light as normal. Pretty sure this is related.

Yep your Magnasteer is no longer variable boost... and yes its interrelated... I would say check wiring for a bad wire or connection at your abs sensors...

I have the exact same condition you have.

OK, where are the ABS sensors and what exactly am I looking for?

Well, didn't know what I was looking at, but I didn't see anything. Since I'm an amateur with experience pretty much limited to oil changes, spark plugs, and front brake pads and rotors I may take this to (shudder) the dealer. On the bright side I don't THINK it's something that renders the car undriveable, just annoying with all the ding donging.

Well, the good news is that apparently I didn't damage anything by running over the intruding cone. The bad news (according to the dealer, who I do trust BTW) is that it's the EBCM for $1600 and change. Apparently it's throwing the C0896 code. If I remember correctly this was a part that everyone has problems finding, and when they do it's usually close to $1000 best case, correct?

Yep that sounds right. Had the same issue with Magna steer, abs, traction and stability control. Magna steer was the last component to start showing up after a year of abs traction and stability. That is when we knew85 was the EBCM. Morad got me the EBCM for $500 used. Dealer put it in and never had an issue since. Glad the dealer allowed the use of a used part. After year figuring out what is wrong and replacing parts. The Comp G is the only grand prix with that model. No other regular GTP or GXP or regular model had that EBCM. Kinda sucks.n

You may be looking in a range of $400 to $1000

Make sure I've got the economics right here:

$160 for the diagnostics I've already had done
I'm guess the same again for the install, maybe a shade more
anywhere from $400 to $1000 for the part, totally variable

So an estimated $320 for labor (which really isn't bad considering) plus $400 - $1000
$720 best case and $1320 worst case for a used part. Seems this happens a lot, what are the odds of the used part crapping out two years later vs. the new one?

-- Mon Nov 14, 2011 1:17 pm --

Thinking about this some more. Is it really just unscrewing a few things and popping on the new one? If it's that simple...

-- Mon Nov 14, 2011 1:26 pm --

Also, am I correct in my analysis that I can drive the car like this for a while, just with no ABC, Stabilitrack, Magnasteer, and TC?

Over a year and no issues here. I don't hear the EBCM being replaced to often.
My dealer only charged me $90 for diagnostic and $180 to install. On average the price seems to be $500 to $600.

-- Mon Nov 14, 2011 7:21 pm --

If you want to save money you can try GMpartsdirect.com if you get the part number I think it was around $1300. Shipping may take a week or two of in stock. If you keep your receipt your dealer should be able to warranty a GM part if something goes wrong, mine will.

I am having the same problem of the ABS/Traction/Stability. Last weekend I inspected the wheel bearing connections and found no corrosion or sign of water presence. I did put some diaelectric grease on all of them. This week, three times now, I am getting ABS/Traction/Stability with the new addition of the variable steer assist message.

If indeed the EBCM, has anyone had luck in having the module repaired vs. replaced? I have heard mention of a company on other sites. This site - http://www.modulemaster.com/en/index.php According to them my 05 GTP has a Bosch 5.4 ABS module for which they give instructions on how to find/remove. Repair cost is $160 with a 5-year warranty. Thoughts?

Trace your wiring from your wheel sensors back before you spend big dollars on replacing your EBCM...

I have a long weekend in front of me so Im tacling this problem tomorrow or Saturday with my car...

See if that works, wire seems to also be a common issue, I personally did hubs, wires, some sensors, about $1200 later it was the EBCM. Granted all those could contributed to my particular issue. When the Magna steer code came up and to/abs/sc and would not go away it was them said it was the EBCM. You guys are having it intermittently. Not sure how true it was but the dealer said they had to program the EBCM, others here just swapped it out without that and no issues.

Install it yourself, it's not that hard, I replaced mine a few years ago with a used one from Ed and it is still working fine.

Well, since I'm getting furloughed Monday I decided to go the cheap route and send it to cheap-abs.com. It looks like several in the VW community are happy with his work. I just pulled out the part today, 20 minutes, and that included putting the car back together. Had a bit of difficulty getting the EBCU out of the tray and had to 'massage' some brake lines, but otherwise it was a piece of cake. Thanks all for the words of encouragement.

It was my understanding that the car is driveable even with this part removed, however, I'm now getting the brake light on in addition to the ABS and TC lights. Is it still OK to drive?

Happy T Day all!

Yes it will be fine to drive. There was once a time when cars didn't have fancy shmancy technologies  . Oh the joys of driving without electronic assisted things. My favorite!!!

Yeah, I know. What's disturbing me is the brake light. I was brought up to know the yellow lights mean "Get it taken care of soon" and red means "STOP DRIVING YOU MORON!". That's why I was wondering.

Haha, yeah that's pretty accurate, but you'll be fine. If you live up north and get snow, now is the perfect time to enjoy driving without ABS

I'll pass in playing with snow. The idiots here in Vegas can't drive in it. I know how (grew up in NY) but we've got all the CA drivers out here who can't drive on dry pavement; throw in rain accidents go nuts, snow everyone goes 5 miles per hour because they don't know what to do.

OK, how do I get this damn thing back in?

A HA! Just gotta be smarter then the ABS module :-). I wasn't getting enough room to line the pins up. Unbolted the ABS module and still not enough. Found out it sits on a post or something that can't be seen. Pulled it straight up, done. No more codes. Thanks guys.

-- Fri Dec 02, 2011 1:58 pm --

Oh, forgot. I did use cheap-abs.com. Sent it out Thanksgiving night with a Monday ETA. Got it back in yesterdays mail, so it was one day turnaround as promised for $110. Only downside is that he doesn't let you know he has the part, fixed it, or sent it back, but he sticks to his timeline, so you should be able to tell what's going on.

Ok so a couple of weeks later, how is the module? Any lights come back on? If you are still getting good results Im going to send mine to him after Christmas...

No problems at all. I was a little disappointed at first that it didn't appear to be a professional job, but 1: It was a $100 repair and 2: He used RTV, what else could he have used. I'm happy at going with him then $400-$500 for a used one from Morads and VERY happy with him over the dealers $1600. To save a few bucks on shipping, he sent it back in a Priority USPS envelope wrapped in bubble wrap, so no need for a box, which is twice the price. He also taped all the terminals so they didn't rattle. Might be a good idea; if he did it, we probably should as well.

If you send your unit in now, I'd expect you'd have it back before XMas. No need to wait.
