Well now that this fiasco with SSC is coming to an end....i hope, I have come to the conclusion I should probably replace the struts at the same time as my springs. The reason is i have no idea how old the struts on it are and the car is at about 60 k miles so probably due for replacement. I was looking at a set of monroes that where 60 a piece for the front and 50 a piece for the back. However i know iv heard things about certain struts cancelling out the lowering effect of springs in particular billistines. so what would you guys sudgest? i dont really care about how good they are so long as they are on par with the original factory struts. Thanks guys.

CompG struts. I wouldn't do Bilsteins. I did Bilsteins and I'm not 100% happy with the drop. The ride yes, but not the drop.

Im thinking ill pull the trigger on these from this sight in a couple weeks when I get my next pay check.
They are 251 dollars and I can get free ground shipping.

http://justsuspension.com/pontiac-grand ... t1534.html

I assume their ok being a "KYB authorized distributer" But just on the off chance so i dont get screwed like with my springs from ZZP (Which im still waiting on) Does any one know anything bad about these guys?

I think he is going on a budget based off over threads. Billsteins are nice but real pricey unless you can find a deal in the b/s/t. since your lowering it personally I would save a little more and go with comp g's but i've heard mix reviews about the lifespan of Gr2 w/ lowering but there cheap enough were you could replace them again down the road.

Scott, you guy lucky to find such a great deal that Corey was selling. However, if someone was to piece everything together, it would be cheaper to get AGX's + 97-03 control arms to make them work for the front.

I just figure my old ones are shot and need a decent set of struts. The billistines cancel out the effect of the lowering springs by at least half. My simple question is do you stand by what you said above that GR-2 are a good choice?

this weekend my car is getting lowered with GR-2 struts and SSC springs. It all comes down to personal preference. When someone says the ride is too soft or too stiff, it is their personal preference. I heard mixed reviews about every single strut / spring combo you can imagine....Bilsteins, Comp G's, GR-2's, Monroe, etc...I've heard good and bad things about all. I wouldn't believe what you hear until you take a ride in a lowered car, then you can judge on what you like / dislike about the set up. I have heard that GR-2's dont last...however two of my friends both have close to 80k miles on their GR-2's. GR-2's are a great bang for your buck. Otherwise, go ahead and spend close to a grand for the AGX's. lol. GR-2's or Coilovers FTW!!!! Forget those high dollar struts.

gr-2's don't really like to be lowered
you can do it but it'll shorten the life considerably

So do you guys think its worth spending 250 bucks on new struts from KYB or just put the new springs on my old struts and call it a day?

Put them on your old struts and see how you like them. After all you said they're pretty worn so it won't hurt besides wearing them faster w/ lowering springs and then if needed go w/ new struts

At 80K miles, both of our 04 GP's factory struts were shot. There was virtually no damping capability left in them, especially when compared to the new CompG struts and the new GR-2s that I ordered for both cars (one a CompG, the other a GT).

If you have 60K miles, you're going to need new struts soon anyway. In my humble opinion, you're wasting your time installing new springs on the old struts. Anything would be better than the old ones.

If all you want is something comparable to the factory struts, the KYB GR-2s are probably going to be fine for you. I like the firmer, sportier damping of the CompGs, but frankly the GR-2s are OK and certainly are better on crappy, torn up roads. There are pluses and minuses to all the choices. On some days the CompGs are a little too tough a ride on bumpy roads, but on other days I really appreciate the firmer ride.

I would definitely put your new springs on new struts! Why go back in 10K and redo it all with new struts?

Unless...if I decide to keep my car....you want my used Comp G struts?? :) 76K on them!

If you have the money I would grab structs to and save the hassle of having to uninstall springs etc plus it would make easier for you to assemble springs w/ the new structs instead of having to take your current stucts and removing springs etc

Just make sure you get a hold of Vinnie and get a set of spacers ..... I was able to run for about 700 miles before the DS CV boot came apart and thru grease all over the place. $175 later and another trip to the alignment shop and I was good to go.

When you lower these cars you change the axle geometry which causes problems, vibrations under excelleration and in my cause the CV joint boot was ruined.

Here's a link to what I'm talking about ....

gpona-community-vendors-f68/lowering-spring-vibration-motor-mount-spacers-t774.html

Good Luck, lowering these car can be frustrating but once the setup is right you'll love it....

Any one else done this as a supporting mod? Cause i never heard of it when lowering a car and never heard about that problem makes me wonder how common it is.

Sure have. You want vinnie spacers to raise the engine and tranny up. When you lower the car your also changing the height of the drivetrain. Spacers help out back where it should be and helps with vibration and lowers the chances of breaking your cv axles. All common when lowering a vehicle.
