No case learn is needed if you don't get a check engine light.

For 2004 Grand Prix only:

Set the parking brake to disable the daytime running lights system to avoid draining the vehicles battery.
Try to start the vehicle by turning key to the START position (using a Master Pass-Key key, not a Valet key).
Observe the SECURITY telltale on the driver information center. Allow the key to fall back into the ON position. DO NOT TURN THE KEY TO THE OFF POSITION.
After no less than fifteen minutes turn OFF the ignition and wait for ten seconds.

So;

1. Turn key to start, see security light, move key to on. Wait atleast 15 minutes. Turn to off. Wait 10 seconds.
2. Turn key to start, see security light, move key to on. Wait atleast 15 minutes. Turn to off. Wait 10 seconds. (second time)
3. Turn key to start, see security light, move key to on. Wait atleast 15 minutes. Turn to off. Wait 10 seconds. (third time)

During this process dont remove the key.

Can you have the door open?

That's right, and having the door open won't affect it. Also enable the parking brake, then the headlights won't be on the whole time.

45 fraking minutes to process a relearn??... WOW dude if they keep up with these long "reprogram" times, pretty soon you'll be leaving the dammed car hooked up to a charger overnight to relearn crap!!!!!!.. That is just crazy!!!

That should help somebody.
It's a lot cheaper than towing the car to the dealer's for a reprogram [faster too].
Good info Don.

The Master Pass-Key is the key you use everyday and it has a computer chip in it for security. If the PCM doesn't "see" your key with that unique chip in it, the car won't start.

Once you do a security relearn on a PCM you don't need to do it again. You can swap them back and forth until the cows come home and it will always recognize your key.

It will take about a hundred miles or so to learn the settings.

So... do you always need to do this? I've never done it but I'm using the original computer but reprogramming it. How will I know if I need to do this? On a side note, where can I get another key and keyless entry fob? Can I just buy them off ebay and get them cut and use the security relearn to add them?

Thanks!

Steven

Steven once the PCM is programmed for your key you can swap it in and out all day long. If you put a different PCM in there you will need to do a security relearn once and it will always work. You can buy a fob on Ebay and have it programmed, but I don't know about the key. That might have to be matched at the dealer to your other key number.

04gtpcompg you shouldn't have to do the security relearn after the battery dies, I've disconnected mine many times and never had to. The PCM remembers the key it's matched to, and it can sit in a box for years and it will still retain the memory. I just reinstalled my stock PCM and after not using it for 3 years the car started right up.

Thanks Don! I didn't think I needed to do anything. It's nice to see that you haven't taken all your GP knowledge with you when you left the fold and stepped UP into the G8, ha ha!
