so I'm messing around with these a little right now. seems in order to get the hot spot away you hav to pull back the bulb a considerable amount. and then it seems the back of the bulb won't clear wen you go to put the housings back in.. ill take pics

I figure it this way:

If the existing projectors can be tweaked to fix the hotspot and cutoff:

  • Purchase a new lens (size will eventually be determined via measurement) to fix the rings.
  • Purchase some new halos (70 mm - 100 mm). Optional really.

If the existing projectors cannot be tweaked to satisfaction:

  • Purchase a new projector (Morimoto Minis - provided it fits) for retrofitting.
  • Purchase some new halos (70 mm - 100 mm). Optional really.

A new lens wouldn't be needed in the above case as a clear lens already comes pre-installed with the Morimoto Minis.

sounds like spyderauto ended up figuring out that the projectors were not going to work without having to cut into the car behind the headlight housings. So, they ended up throwing a projector housing with a set of lenses that didn't match up so they could sell them and make money. They should have used the Mini projectors....

Spyder's been working on these for quite some time now. They've had to send back many units due to them not fitting. As many of the retrofitters can attest, there isn't must room behind the headlight and of course, you cannot conceivably sell a product under the condition that the purchaser damages his or her own property.

They tend to use the same lackluster lenses across the board. Just take a look at the G6 and Grand Prix (97-03) projectors. Same "junk."

Using the Morimoto Minis would have easily doubled the price of these headlights, despite them only costing $120. Like you mentioned, it's all about revenue and making a profit. More people will buy these based on their exterior look and relatively low price versus what kind of light output they provide (or lack in this case, lol).

I'm just glad these are out as they provide a great (good-looking) foundation for a retrofit.

If you can find those Bosch Mini H3 projectors they were actually pretty decent for output. Better then the halogen oem reflector

Would have happily paid the extra price for a direct bolt in, no modification projector headlight.

Not to mention I get flashed all the time, I'm totally used to it. I just flash them with my real high beams and I'm sure they get more mad lol.

depends on the state in michigan HIDs are illegal in none OEM aplications it's not a strongly enforced law though

if the lights have a DOT stamp then they are legal in all 50 states

TECHNICALLY HID kits in halogen housings are illegal in all 50 states. I have NEVER heard of the law being enforced though unless someone had like 30,000k's (not typo) or very badly aimed, then typically it's just a fix-it ticket.

acording to my uncle in north carolina there is no law saying you can not. just you can not modify the housing. if you leave the housing alone you can put what ever bulb you wnat in there. most othere stats broden it saying you can not modify lights at all (so yes retrofits are illegal in most states lol)

this is how far in the bulb sits in the back
Image

in order to get the annoying hotspot to completely dissapear you hav to pull the bulb out enough to make it flush to that surrounding
like so..
Image

but wen the bulb sits that far back it hits the plastic behind the headlight housing and the headlight wont latch in

this phone takes awesome pics

-- Sun Aug 15, 2010 12:39 am --

i gotta figure out how to get the actual angle right tho.. the left one is slanted rlly bad.. the 2 screws on the back adjust it up and down and left and right

Sounds as though we may have to switch out the entire projector in order to alleviate the problems of these headlights...

i was thinking of opening the headlights and messing with them a little.. but we will never get close to drunkies output without changing the projectors.. but if you just want the look of projectors and arent so worried about actual output, just fix the hotspot issue and you should be good to go

the thing about that cutoff line guys is the bulbs are too far forward. they need pulled back in order to fix that high spot and even the line out some. there was a guy on g6p that figured that out. it was in the link i posted in the other projector thread. haha looks like someone may have figured that out though

Need length measurements of the current projector inside of the housing so we can determine if the morimoto mini's will work in place of it.

Just read through that whole thread of 19 pages!! Anyhow looks like "cambogie" did a pretty good job on fixing the output of those projectors, they are worth it after modding....moving the bulb back and fabbing up a new shield gives some hope with these new projector headlights in order to salvage them...

Im going to be ordering a set at the end of the month, Ill install them first and take some pics then Ill most likely try and fix them up and take more pics....only if someone has not done this to them by then...of course morimoto mini's in there would be awesome...
