Here, let me fix your post:

I refuse to believe that these cannot be opened. People have already opened aftermarket projectors and retrofitted better projectors into them (Output Pictures: Acura TSX Retrofit into W163 Aftermarket Headlights.). I understand that the manufacturer may be different but it is my understanding that most of these aftermarket projectors are of the same quality (or lack there of).

If anything, a heatgun around the seal might be the ticket versus putting the whole thing in the oven.

There has to be a way to open up those headlights.

If they are made by the manufacturer that made the 97-03's then they can not be opened. Many have tried and never accomplished it. The plastic lens gets to brittle with heat.

Thats what the OP said...it started getting too soft and brittle.

AND He said he used a Heat Gun

Must have missed the post where I said I used a heat gun and ran into this problem.

I took the plunge and ordered a set of these in smoke. I've got
my fingers crossed that I'll be able to get them installed, working
properly and aimed right. :) I expect to just use standard bulbs...
no HID's.

What's the current thinking on the wiring? I've got an '04 which
uses the turn signals as its DRL's. So, low beam and hi beam should
be wired as normal, but where to wire the angels and the LED's? I'd
rather not have to put in switches but I'm not seeing an alternative.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Mike

You splice the halos and leds into the side markers. You also use the stock wiring harness that the side markers are connected to and the stock rubber gasket around the entire head light.

Yeah I read about it but "forgot" about it.

Someone needs to provide some high quality images of the seams and what it looks like after they've been heated. There just has to be something missing.

I might take the plunge.

I cannot believe Spyder. Check out the cut off from 10:55 onwards.

These G35 lights have LED halos like ours yet they'll market CCFL halos on other vehicles knowing LED halos don't light up for shit.

www.youtube.com Video from : www.youtube.com

I don't get it.

Looks like they just got theirs as well.

Except theirs gets promoted on Sypder's site and on G35Driver.com's forum, PLUS they get a better projector.

Not the best cut off but still better than ours.

Projectors need a proper bowl depth and a way to focus the beam, these headlights only provide about 3-4" of depth inside the headlight not really enough. They couldn't make headlight that stuck out the back and you had to trim the car yourself to make it all work.

Get me one at a good price and I'll attempt to open one.

If I can get it open and retrofit it, there'll be a lot more interested in a group buy for sure.

I purchased a set yesterday afternoon.

I'll get these open even if I have to cut the clear plastic lens by the seams.

I'll probably order the Morimoto Minis (D2S) tomorrow along with the DDM tuning 35W slim ballasts with 4500K D2S bulbs and relay harness.

Halos will have to wait until I determine the size. I'm still on the fence with these.

Should this all be successful, my plan is to wire up the cutoff shield solenoid to the high beams. I'm also thinking about rewiring my lights to use the park lights/turn signals as my DRLs.

Ah, a smart man goes D2S. Image

I actually just placed my order today over the phone and was told to expect them sometime Wednesday or Thursday (same day the headlights get in).

Can't beat $128 shipped!

EDIT: Clarification.

Are those the Morimoto projectors? I spoke with Matt at the Retrofit source and he said the difference between the H1 and D2S bulbs for these projectors is negligible.

Morimoto Minis (D2S) are 0.35" "shorter" (less depth) than the H1s (5.00" vs. 5.35" respectively). That's hardly negligible for us. Also, output is better than the H1s (check HIDPlanet for more info).

Here was the email that I received after asking about differences between the two.

Hey Roger,
Thanks for your patience waiting on a reply over the weekend here, let me take a moment to answer your question below:

For the most part, the performance of the Mini D2S and Mini H1 projectors is even, but I will highlight some of the small differences below:

1) Beam uniformity: The Mini D2S is a bit better in this category, with slightly more even-ness in its output.
2) Beam Width: The Mini H1 is slightly wider here
3) High beam performance: The Mini D2S has a brighter, more defined high beam (bi-xenon) output
4) Cutoff color/sharpness: The projectors are even, since they use the same exact lens - giving them a sharp and colorful cutoff line.
5) Bulb type used: Obviously the H1 takes H1 and D2S takes D2S, and we feel that D2S bulbs offer a bit more precision, though no more light.
6) Size: The D2S version is about 1/2" shorter in overall depth, but is also barely wider and a little bit taller than the H1 version.
7) Modification to your OEM housing: the diameter of the mounting shaft on the H1 is 22mm, whereas it's 32mm on the D2S model, so you probably wont have to modify anything at all when using the MH1, whereas you will likely have to just widen the diameter of the existing bulb opening to use the D2S projector.

Therefore, if you value the categories more than the H1 wins, you should probably go that route - and vice versa for the D2S model.

So basically, if you've got the ballasts & bulbs for the H1 projectors, there isn't really any good reason to go with the H1's

Let me know if there are any other questions I can help answer and we'll be glad to assist you.

Matt @ TRS
