Thanks BlueJacket.....

There are always questions about the Comp G package and I do not think there has ever been a thread that really listed all of what the Comp G package included. So please post any info that you have on the Comp G package and I will update this first post to contain it.

1. Tap Shift
2. Magnasteer II
3. HUD
4. Performance Tuned Suspension
5. Light weight Machined Finished 10 spoke wheels (could be upgraded to 5 spoke wheels Curved Chrome in 04 and Polished 5 spoke wheels in 05)
6. Red Brake Calipers (brakes are the some of all 04+ GP)
7. Stabilitrak Sport
8. Competition Group badge on the trunk under the GTP badge PN 10342485
9. Comp G badges on the doors (late 04 and all 05's have these) PN 10350911
10. 3.29:1 final gear ratio
11. P225/55VR17 Performance Tires
12. 5 button DIC
13. 142 top speed limit (126 for GTP's without Comp G)

RPO code was WS6 and was only available in 2004 and 2005 and could only be added to GTP's.

Changes to the 4T65E transmission with Tap Shift: Thanks GM Guy

The internal changes to the 4T65E transmission are in the valve body, spacer plate and the channel plate. These parts are unique to the TAP Shift equipped 4T65E transmission. A non-TAP transmission has a different valve body, spacer plate and channel plate and these parts can not be mixed.

The new TAP spacer plate has three notches in the lower right corner. The new non-TAP spacer plate has no notches in the lower right corner.

The new TAP-equipped vehicle also has different fourth clutch plates, with fiber on one side and steel on the other. A non-TAP vehicle will have normal fiber and steel plates for the fourth clutch.
The 2/1 manual band is made from a different material for TAP-Shift(TM) applications. This material will handle more stress than the normal 2/1 band in the other models.

The transaxle filter has also changed to improve oil pickup. The new filter will back service any past model 4T65E and its use is required on all

Notes on what cars could have Tap Shift:

Tap Shift was only available on Comp G’s is 2004. In 2005 Tap Shift was available on Comp G’s, then at the end of 2005 on GTP’s with the Sport Package (these cars were built after the Comp G option was ended when the production of the GXP started) and all GXP’s 2005 to present have Tap Shift and were the only cars from 2006 to present to have Tap Shift.

Magnasteer II

How Magnasteer II works:

Heads Up Display:

Info from the makers of our HUD

HUD:

Head-Up Display, capable of projecting 18 different functions onto the windshield including audio system information, speed, compass, outside air temperature, PRNDL, "Stealth" mode, intermediate gear positions, performance upshift light, high beam indicator, and warning lights such as head lights suggested.

Image

Also. 2005 cars with Nav systems the HUD will display driving directions. See Pic: Thanks Bleen

Image

HUD CONTROL KNOB:

This knob controls the brightness of the HUD, the up and down position of the display, and allows you to set it to show just your speed or speed, temp and direction.

Owners Manual's info on the HUD:

Image

Suspension: Thanks for the info radrace19

Please correct me if I am wrong in this section or if something needs added.

The Comp G has the FE3 Suspension

Springs are the same for all 04 and 05 cars.
Rear Stiffer Struts PN is 88955413
Front Stiffer Struts PN is 88955411

The front sway bar for is the same for the 04's and 05's PN 10346886

2004 rear sway bar is PN 10274610 (same as the GXP sway bar and is a the better bar of the two years)
2005 rear sway bar is PN 10351314 (and is different from the 04)

What am I missing? Anyone have anything to add?

Wheels/Red calipers:

All wheels were 17 inch by 6.5 inch.

Some cars came with lug nuts with black covers and others came with chrome lugs.

2004 and 2005 Light Weight Machined Finished 10 spoke wheels:

These were Comp G only wheels.

February 04 - Fusion Orange pulled from the lineup

05 colors - Polo Green Deleted; Fusion Orange returns; Blue Green Crystal (bleen) added

February 05 - Fusion Orange deleted again from the Grand Prix Color line up.

Important Dates in Comp G History: Thanks rhinorocker and bleen

February 03 - First Comp G's hit the show room floor.

March 04 - Comp G door badges added.

June/early July 04 - (which is a little earlier than usual for a non-changing model) The first 05 Comp G's hit show room floors.

February 17, 2005 - Production of the Comp G stops to make way for the GXP.

Production Numbers:

There are a lot of holes here so help me out.

For 2004

There were 131,551 GP sold

GT1: 27%
GT2: 52%
GTP: 7%
Comp G: 14% Giving us a total of 18,417 Comp G's Sold in 2004

For 2005

There were 122,398 GP sold

This is all the info I have for 2005 but if we use the 14% number that would give us a total of 17,136 Comp G's Sold in 2005

So there were around 35,553 (give or take) Comp G's sold.

How many Comp G's are on ClubGP?

Per trend1's thread http://www.clubgp.com/newforum/tm.asp?m ... =3&smode=1

There are 161 members with 2004's and 12 with 2005's

"Pre-Production" Comp G's:

These cars were the first ones built in 2003 and were used for press photos and auto shows. Some of these cars were sold to the public. I know of three that have been spotted. One was white and I have no other info on it. I have seen more then once a silver and a black one here in Columbus with silver 5 spoke wheels. And last a member here (silverGompG) has a silver one with 10 spoke wheels.

The known differences with these car are:

1. Silver calipers
2. Grand Prix badge on the doors
3. Different GTP Comp G badge in a different location then other GTP's.
4. All red engine cover

Silver calipers:

I've seen a white pre-production 04 Comp G on Interstate 91 in CT, outside of Hartford. I spotted it immediately because of the different badges. A middle-aged lady in her 40s was tearing down the fast lane in rush hour :D

Comp G

The Competition Group Package (Comp G), optional on the GTP model, makes Grand Prix capable of attaining .83G of lateral acceleration in turns, making it the best-handling car in its class. StabiliTrak Sport, a segment-exclusive four-wheel vehicle stability enhancement system, also is included in the Comp G package, which features a sports-tuned suspension, 3.29 axle ratio, performance tires and Magnasteer II.

StabiliTrak assists the vehicle in maintaining the driver’s intended path by applying a brake force at any corner of the vehicle independent of the driver’s use of the brake pedal. StabiliTrak uses an accelerator pedal position sensor, a brake master cylinder pressure sensor and a steering wheel angle sensor as inputs to interpret the driver’s desired path and whether to accelerate or decelerate the vehicle. StabiliTrak also uses these sensors plus a lateral accelerometer and yaw rate sensor to determine the vehicle’s actual path. If the difference between the driver’s desired path and the vehicle’s actual path becomes great enough, StabiliTrak takes appropriate action to assist the driver with maintaining the desired path. If the vehicle begins to “snowplow,â€

Here's a better picture of the Comp G badge.... None are this clear that I've found on the web, so I took my own.

Stumbled upon a picture of the pre-production shifter on the Comp G. Looks like it was called the "Tac Shift" before "Tap Shift". Here's what it looked like.... pretty subtle difference.
I also attached some other photos this gentleman had taken...

I had a question in regards to the transmission oil replacement filter. I had the garage I go to change the filter and transmission oil in my 04 Comp G and wanted to know what if the mechanic didn't know that there was two different types of filters on for the reg non tap-shift and one for the comp g's which have tap shift. Does the comp g need a different filter?

I saw this as part of this post on the first page "The transaxle filter has also changed to improve oil pickup. The new filter will back service any past model 4T65E and its use is required on all

I don't wan't my transmission to get ruined should I check into what type of transmission oil filter he used for my peace of mind?
Thanks

Of 30,181 2004 GTPs, 15,301 were Comp Gs

Of 9,293 2005 GTPs, 3,009 were Comp Gs

15,301 + 3,009 = 18,310 Total Comp G GP's

Much rarer than previously thought!

Does the performance tuned suspension include stiffer springs?

Has anyone installed lowering springs in their Comp G?
