I originally used a plastic trash can as my heat shield. The PCM was zip tied to the frame and was located under the trash can which was just big enough to house the filter. After driving the filter would be just as hot as the surrounding materials so I decided it was time for a change. I decided to go to lowes and try something myself. I chose a sheet of aluminum 24x36in and air duct insulator (foam/foil w/ adhesive backing). I measured and cut out my heatsheild. After that I test fit and then cut holes for the PCM wires and drilled holes for mounting etc. I cut the hole for the air filter as well. The filter does not sag now and is much cooler to the touch after driving then it was previously. The PCM also now has a place to rest and am finally happy with my intake. I recommend to anyone as it was fairly cheap to construct and if done right can help out temps (even though I don't have any scientific proof). I also moved back up to a 3.8 ZZP MPS pulley until I can get rid of some of my knock, im hoping the intake helped reduce it.

So here are a few pics, I will get up higher quality/more pics when I get to my apt. I also included a WOT video just for the heck of it too.

The views of that were a little odd so I decided to make my own design. That is where I originally started from that viewpoint photograph of the intake. I don't want a lid on mine like the others because I have air coming off of hood, although not direct it is cool air and I don't want a lid obstructing that. I used aluminum does anyone know of any other thin material that is more heat resistant??

Doesn't look bad. One thing i've wanted to do on my K&N CAI is to put a screen by the brace, if I look at my PCM it's covered in flys and bees, also some pretty yellow feathers on the filter itself. If you worked that in somehow you'd probably save the filter alittle damage. Also i'd work on closing up the side against the strut bulge, heat will get in through there and that kinda kills the purpose of the whole thing.

Heat will get in regardless. This was just an upgraded idea from the trash can idea. The trash can wouldn't hold the filter well and over time the plastic became very flimsy and was crap. Now the filter is secure and at least has some sort of heat protection which is noticeable when touching filter after WOT runs (was hot when I had HAI).

Well, if you're going to go that far, why not 2000* ceramic coated stainless?

Meh, I I'd like to see a dyno comparison of with/without this shield. I hypothesize that it's a waste of time and effort anyway, like a "CAI" box.

But it's not a closed and sealed box. It's just reflecting the heat given off by the cross over, block, upper rad hose. Yeah, I'm sure it's not going to really drop the IAT temps a ton, but every couple of degress helps fight the Knock monster. Besides this isn't like an actual closed box which only allows air to come from one direction which you've proved isn't as good as an open cone in one of your posts about a dyno comparison between open cone and a closed box (even though IMHO the test was inaccurate becuase you had the hood open and fan blowing onto the engine which would also blow air right onto the open filter and not onto the filter in the box thus creating a verdict in the open cones filter. Even though 1 or 2 hp isn't worth 150 bucks anyhow). I'd say the box helps since it's not completely sealed and thus still keeps things a little cooler without sacrificing air flow rate. I like it personally.

Want to pay for the dyno runs? Heck with the amount of money going towards dynos, I could put it towards better mods for HP.

The reason for creating this aluminum shield was primarily to increase looks from previous trash-can style intake. I needed the tubing/cone to be supported better and the aluminum does just that. I was hoping and shooting for some heat relief from the filter. This is where I thought about the intake idea and insulator foil. This is not a sealed intake as air is coming in from more directions then 1. I wanted the incoming air from hood (although not much) to enter the intake area. I didn't want to drop 200+ for an intake though, so I decided I would just be "different".

I'm not really well educated in the world of temps/materials and wouldn't be shocked if this "heat shield" is actually heat trapping. I should do tests but I lack the know-how/time and utilities to do it.

Yeah, it definitely looks better than the trashcan thing. And is doubtless better-flowing than a cai box. Aluminum is easily heat-soaked, though you could probably just test all this with a $5 thermometer from wal-mart. The electronic kind that has two wires for two different locations. With it being kidn of halfway between the cai box and open cone... and the difference between those being something like 1.5hp.... meh. If I've ever got the chance to play with a dyno again, maybe I should try something like this... There's a little part of me that wonders if it's better than both... though I can't imagine it makes more than 1hp over open cone. Of course, the thermometer test could pretty much tell you if it's lowering the temperature or not, which would at least be some indication of a performance difference.
