Its been two years since i traded the 00 GT on my G8 and I've been back looking for a GP for a DD. I just recently found a low mileage (30,000) Comp G for sale. They are asking 11,998 which sounds high....for an 04.
Any thoughts/suggestions? Anything in particular that i should look for? I know the trouble areas for the 97-03's but am unfamiliar with the 04+.

Thanks in advance!!

Common problem for the 04 are the onstar antenna leaking. Make sure theres no leak and check the headliner for any water stains. Make sure tranny is good. Drive the car in tap ahift and make sure the shifts are smooth. Other then the the hud trim tends to crack and the spring in the hud breaks but those are minor fixes you could do yourself if ever occured.

That's not high for an 04 Comp G with that kind of mileage. My 05 BB'd for that much and I had 20K more miles.

Agreed I think that is a good price, my 04CompG totaled the other day and I got just shy of 10k for it from my insurance with 100k+ miles on it. Plus I got to take some aftermarket parts off it.

And just like the others said that's a good price. Of course offer lower and save money :)

Like the 97-03's, the 04 is going to need a lower intake manifold gasket replacement at some point, probably around 50K miles if not sooner (both of our 04s' gaskets failed).

Typically in the Cincinnati area, a CompG with 80-100K miles retails around $9K-$10K.

The LIM problem is not typical with the 04+ models. I read that they last a lot longer in the new models. I have 219,000 miles on mine and I haven't had to change it, knock on wood.

 Now your making me think twice about selling my GP... meh. No way I can afford to pay for cars with insurance and keep modding the G8

If I were in the market again for another GP, GTP, or Comp-G, my list would contain the following (and probably more)-

- "L" bracket hold downs for the headlights to stop the "shakiness" (dealer won't fix- check it if you buy it)
- Front wheel well liners are cut too narrow, leaving a 1 1/2 ~ 2" gap where wheel spray goes directly into your engine compartment. Causes a lot of corrosion.... The replacement liners are $20~25 a piece, well worth it. (dealer won't fix- check it if you buy it)
- On-Star antenna leak as someone mentioned before... (dealer won't fix- check it if you buy it)
- Check weather strip under the passenger side cowl above the blower motor. It will most certainly be sitting in there non-attached, letting water drain into your foot-well area. (dealer won't fix- check it if you buy it)
- Valve covers, check for oil seeping on your manifolds, might get some money taken off
- Test out the steering at slow speed with alternating hard turns.. Go left, then go right, etc, so you're spinning that wheel all the way around. You'll find out quickly if you have a bad ISS or other headache problem that cost big $$$
- Test the sunroof
- Drive car in reverse, listen for end-link play or strut bearing noise, engine shifting/clunking
- Bring an ODB-II reader if you have, plug it in and check to see any other intermittent issues keep popping up
- Ask if car can have a basic tune-up if you agree to buy- new plugs, PCV valve, oil change, etc.
- Check for weather-cracking in tire sidewalls, they could be originals... Might have good tread, but, you'll end up replacing them in the short term to be safe.
- Check belts for cracks/glazing/wet spots, if wet, inspect all main areas on the side of the engine, coolant elbows, LIM, oil filter housing, etc

Lord knows I'd be a picky SOB buying another one of these, since it's still quite expensive. I'd let a lot of things slide if the car was $4,000, but for $12,000 it should be running as good as new.

If you buy take the vin to the gm dealer and search for recalls.

Onstar antenna leak is minor and wouldn't stop me from buying the car.

Look for abs/tcs/stability/engine lights... Ebcms and wheel bearings...

As someone said, a smooth shifting transmission and I'd check all the power window motors.

Wow that much huh? I paid 8k for mine last year with my rims, springs, and low miles...

Most comp gs in ontario are going for 4 (high miles) to 6 grand currently.

I paid 9700 before tax and fees in June of 2009 for my 04 Comp G with 68k; just to put it in perspective.

There are plenty of 04s that needed the LIM gaskets replaced. Maybe it isn't as prevalent as on the previous model, but it isn't uncommon. If I were buying an 04 used, I'd expect to have to fix this, and if it doesn't need it, consider it a bonus.

Yup, you beat me to it. They continued using plastic gaskets in 04 and moved to aluminum ones in 05

Actually it's hit or miss with 05s. I think they switched sometime in early 05 to aluminum but my 05 has plastic gaskets. It was built in January of 05 iirc...
