I've had my car up for sale for the last 2 months I'm asking for payoff which is now at $8500 and all I've gotten was one phonecall and the guy left a message. I called him back and left a voicemail and he never called back.

So I get an email from a dealer and they said they were interested in my car. They seen it on Craigslist.

I called them back and they say to bring it by and they'll see what they can do. So I go there and they look at it and take the info to the computer and come back 45min later and say...

It's a beautiful car, we'd love to have it on our lot but the price that the computer is allowing us to spend is "Thousands" away from your asking price..

me: thousands?
him: yeah, I'd rather not say how much so I don't make you mad or insult you.
me: I won't be mad, how much are we talking?
him: $5000
me: what? yeah thats way to much of a differance.
him: well if you can pay it off some more and keep the miles close to what they are now maybe we could be closer to a deal.

Really? $5000? Trade-in value for my car in good condition is about $7500 what are they trying to pull? Buy my car for 5k and sell it for 9-10k, it doesn't need that much to be perfect.

Tell them to go pound salt where the sun don't shine.
Most dealers I've seen like to make about $4-5,000 profit on an average car.
Sad but it seems to be true.

Yeah I was thinking $7000 would be a good start but $5000 is a little rediculous!

Even @ 7000, an 05 GTP seems like a good price. Locally here (cincinnati), I'd say no way you'd find a GTP in good shape for under 7000.

Good luck trying to get 7k in trade for your car... I let mine go for $5k. I got offered as low as 2k, and that was on a 40k truck!

Last Subaru dealer I was at offered me $14K for my car...Book value is almost $20K for private retail, FAIR condition (mine is in excellent condition) is $14.5K, they'd put it up for $24K. They were selling a 2005 STi in way worse shape than mine and with 35K more miles for 19,995 a few months ago...I wasn't even looking to trade in, a Salesman just approached me and said we'd love to have your car on our lot and I bet you'd love a new WRX, we'll give you $14K right now...

Dealerships suck and will always lowball you, never trade a car in.

I wasn't trying to trade in my car.. They said they buy cars for thier lot so I was like sure why not see what they'll give me.

I have a 00 Grand Am GT that I drive now as a DD and the poor GTP has sat around town for the last 2 months.

Dealerships are called stealerships for a reason. Buy low, sell high.

You will have better luck trading in a car at a dealer when you are buying a new car from them. This dealer wanted to see your car, Why did you have to bring it to him? All you did was waste your time and I would make sure the dealer knows it. Dealers make all the money off selling used cars because they control what the buy the car for and what they sell it for. This is not the case with brand new cars.

Oh and everyone calls them stealerships, Why? Are they not allowed to make a profit off anything they sell? I understand sometimes they mark up some cars way too much. When you go in there you need to be in control, When they think they are in control they are going to tuck it up your ass.

^^Bingo. They will be stealerships if they know they can bend you over, which happens to almost everyone who steps in there and didn't do their homework ahead of time. In the parts and service department though, they are stealerships 100% of the time  New car sales though, they generally aren't that big of "stealerships" due to the little room for profit they have after they figure in how much the car was to buy in the first place.
My exgirlfriend's sister just bought a 04 Grand Am from a dealership for 8000 dollars. WTF?!?!?!?!!? They knew that she, being 18 years old and knowing nothing about cars let alone the used car market, wouldn't negotiate down to what the car was actually worth and thus got a huge profit on that sale.

The problem is that too many people think their American cars are worth too much. Around here, at a dealer, you are going to pay around 9k for a 2005 GTP.. That's their price. No way will they even come close to even 7k as a trade in price...

That's a lowball for sure!!! I was offered 4500 trade in on my 05 with 65k miles. Another dealer started with the same 4500 but offered to bump it to 5. And this was to be traded in on my 12' Wrangler. Even knowing I was buying a new vehicle they didn't try to squeeze more out of it. At the same time there is a higher mileage 2007 base model on the lot for 11, yes ELEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS. And it's no longer there which means they must have sold it.

Needless to say I'm very happy I sold it for 6500. And it's still in the family so I can go visit her any time I want.

Trading in did pay off with my 2000gp. 85k, completely destroyed transmission and in 07 I got 5500 for it. I was blown away, book at the time was 2500 for trade in.
