friday i was driving when my hud all of a sudden just shut off, weird i thought, so i pulled over turned the car off and cycled the key and it still didn't come back on, i have checked the indash fuse and the underhood fuse, i checked almost every fuse honestly and found nothing out of the ordinary, upon cycling the key again after checking the fuses the hud worked for a split second and then turned off again. Any ideas? thanks

also after reading a little more on the site i checked the spring and it is intact so that is not the issue here to narrow it down a little more

That is a tough one and I have never read about any other issues with the HUD besides the spring issue. Just make sure that spring is not just hanging from the top part and not connected at the lower part.

Sorry that I could not be of greater help.

It seems like the HUD unit is bad since the spring is still attached.

I am also having a lack of display with my HUD. I believe it is still working as I can use the controls to disable my dash lights. I also am not having a fuse issue. What is this spring we are talking about?

Here's a link to my write-up for diagnosing and repairing the known HUD spring problem.

Hope it helps. Feel free to PM me with any questions.

Thanks so much. I did look down in the HUD when I got home today and I do see the spring laying down inside there. I will let you know how it goes!

It's a pretty easy go, except that the long plastic dash piece that goes across the dash near the windshield will probably crack on you. It's very brittle.

Sounds like a bad HUD. The heatsink it's attached to within the OEM air filter housing could also have some issue, killing the power source to the HUD.

If not this, then look into a new hud? Never really heard of this issue, odd.

Well I took my dash and HUD apart. Thank you so much for the tutorial. I used a 12" drywall taping knife to pry the dash piece and got it out without craking it. The bottom plastic clip was the issue, it had broken and allowed the spring to come off. I made a flange out of aluminum, put it all back together, and it works!! w00t!..... see pic =]

So about 2 years ago when my HUD went out dealer told me that it is not serviceable and has to be replaced to the tune of $650.00 I decided to live without it, came across this point at 5:30pm and at 7:00pm I got HUD again. You guys are da bomb :-)

That aluminum piece looks like a good solution. I just drilled a new hole into the plastic. It wasn't exactly the same geometry, but all that spring does is provide enough tension to hold that mirror back, so it doesn't have to be the exact same spec. And my plastic dashboard piece was like a stale waffle.....it was unbelievable brittle and cracked in 4 places, so be careful prying it up.

That brittle plastic piece against the windshield in my 07 Grand Prix is cracked in two places; spontaneously. I'd guess it's a victim of the frigid winters and hot, muggy summers. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement? And i'm not taking it to a dealer when I can replace it myself...
