Hi,

My hud dash trim was cracked by my local car wash when getting detailed and I want to know how much of a pain it is to remove. Can I just pop that part off or do I have to remove the whole dash. List price for the part is $77 from the dealer which I'm sure I can get it a little cheaper from someplace else. If it isn't much labor I'm just going to do it myself and charge the car wash for a few details.

I'll search the manual but I thought that I would ask here since I know that there has been a few guys that have had to repair their HUDS.

THanks,
Danny

When I did mine I needed to remove the DIC console, both A pillar covers, and the instrument cluster to get to the HUD. When you pull the piece with the light sensor and alarm LED make sure to tie a string or something to them so they can't fall into the dash and be forever lost.

one question though, How the heck did they end up cracking it?

Since your not removing the HUD projector itself you will just have to remove the piller covers and definetly use the suggestion above to tie the connectors to a string, it will potentially save alot of work for nothing.

Another suggestion when you remove it so you dont scratch your dash is when your removing it kinda pull but hold the trim toward the windshield, comes out easier and the metal clips avoid the dash.

I have to remove mine in a few days and if i do I can take a video to make it much easier.

That's what I'm trying to figure out, the only thing that I could think of is either they put a lot of weight on it when cleaning the dash or their towel got caught in it and they yanked it out.

Thanks for the extra tips! So it sounds like it is pretty easy just to replace that piece, I think I'll just replace it myself and get the car wash to give me a couple of clay bar detail rain checks. They are a great car wash (hand wash), I've been going there for years when I'm too lazy to do it myself.

I think the write up for the HUD fix (including removing the trim) is in the DIY section if I remember correctly.

Yeah it is, I just wanted to know fi it was powswsible to remove just that one piece without taking all of the other crapp off first and it appears that I can which makes it an easy job.

I know when I fixed my Hud, I cracked mine in four places, and I was being very careful. They probably pushed hard on that piece, and as brittle as is it, it just snapped.

My wife's 04 GT2 doesn't have the HUD (of course), but the analogous part up there on the dash cracked recently for no reason at all.

They were trying to say that it was because it was so old, that is the reason it cracked... It is parked in the garage every night and when at wotk I use a shade. There is no way that it is brittle from being old (crappy design maybe but not from being 8 years old).

I'd go with crappy design. Mine just cracked in three places while no one was even looking at it. Three
cracks on the passenger side of the HUD surround.

And, yes, that part comes off pretty easy. Just pop the A-pillar covers. Start from each end
and work towards the center, popping the clips one at a time. Pull them as 'straight up' as
you can, not angled towards the back of the car.

As mentioned above, make sure you secure the sensor and alarm.

Have fun!

Mike

I Vote crappy design/Being brittle. This and whatever the car wash did pushed it over the edge. Prolly town got caught on it of cleaning agents pissed it off.

I looked close at mine today when I looked down the HUD window from the outside of the car and mine too is cracking, but just starting...Its a hairline crack about 2 mm long so far.

I installed the hud in my 06 a year ago, I used a 04-05 HUD trim until I can find the proper one but I will be getting the 06 trim piece soon. (06 + is the darker black color instead of grey)

Was no crack around 1 month ago and I didnt remove it lately for any reason. Ive heard of them cracking for no reason before, As well as chevy cavalier dashes cracking around the windshield at the same place. Except cavaliers require the whole dash to be replaced in those cases.

Probably tommorow Im going to remove mine to tighten the navigation antenna from rattling.

Exactly. I'm not changing something that no one except me notices.
