Yeah, it works.. Intercooler is the same size physically, it's just the opening that's a little smaller. It has been done, it works, but as usual, people will always frown upon it..
As people play with cars, they start to believe that every little things brings a performance gain (like moving your intake 1cm in the engine bay). Truth be told, the little you'll lose, won't be noticeable. I have a GEN III intercooler that was run on a GEN V supercharger down to a 2.8 pulley without knock. Could it go smaller? Who knows, didn't try.
