I have an 04 GT2 as most are aware, and my coolant elbows need changing.

Anyone know where I can get the parts from for cheap? And is there a write up anywhere? Never changed these before.

Advance or autozone for around $6. Basically your going to have to remove the alternator and alternator bracket to get to them and you'll also have to take off the serpentine belt.

Alright, cool. Sounds simple enough.

Is this the correct diagram showing where the two are?

The Dorman part # for the elbows is 47065

Found this write up for a '99-'03, hope it helps: Main Drive Belt Tensioner Removal Procedure and Bypass Elbows '99-'03

This is just my experience, so take it for what it's worth.

About two years ago, I had a mechanic repair the LIMs on our two 04s, which requires replacing the these elbows. One of them eventually started to leak at the top elbow.

Fast forward to a month or so ago, and I just re-did the LIM gaskets on our two 04s. Needless to say, after about a week or so, the brand upper elbows (got them from ZZP) on both cars leak. It's just a little, and once the car is warm, it boils off so fast that you can't even see any liquid leaking.

So, in the last four repairs on these two cars, three of the upper elbows leaked. And I have no idea why (new elbows each time). Suffice to say, the leak is so little that I don't really care to try and fix it anymore.

So, be prepared to be frustrated with the result. Other than that, it's easy to do, and the hardest part is probably draining the coolant or getting the belt back on.

Rub some fresh coolant on the O-rings before installing them to prevent them getting pinched.

goldcamj - that may have been why they leaked on you. If you don't lube them a bit they can easily pinch and tear the O-rings on them causing leaks.

Thanks for pointing that out. I might not have thought of that until afterwards knowing my luck : P

It's actually just good life advice to always lube up before inserting anything

Actually Planeboy had given me this same advice before I put it back together, and they still leaked. I might get around to thinking about considering planning to fix it sometime, but with winter setting in and it not being a huge deal at the moment, I'll probably wait until spring rolls around.

Yeah I did and it failed. Crap!!!! Sorry
You could try to RTV it a little before putting them in next time just to see what happens. Worst that could happen is it still leaks haha.

Or you could try cleaning the area with steel wool first, then lube 'em up, and stick it in: How to change coolant elbows

This one is a real pain for no valid reason ..... but that's the way GM did it.
To clean out the holes, get a 3/4" pipe cleaner from Home Depot or Lowes.
The O-rings on these Dorman elbows aren't the greatest either.
Maybe I should pull mine out of the trunk and go over them?
Some of the comments about the Dormans above don't inspire confidence.

^^The last time I replaced these elbows on my cars was about 6-7 years ago. I bought mine from the GM dealer, and haven't had any problems with them leaking. Maybe it's worth it to just get the GM elbows. ;-)

lol true statement.

I used some knockoff brand from pep-boys when I replaced mine during my rocker install and they work good, no leaks or anything.

Dorman doesn't manufacture anything, they're a distributor. The aftermarket company that makes those elbows that Dorman distributes probably makes all the aftermarket elbows.

I've used aftermarket elbows on the 3 cars I've done that needed them (due to a LIM gasket replacement) and none of them leak, but I'm a clean freak and cleaned the aluminum holes like crazy and lubed up the orings before inserting them. Again, good life advice, make sure the hole is clean before inserting something
Not saying that they aren't cheaper or lesser quality to OEM ones, because I'm sure they are, but I'm just stating that I haven't had any issues with them...... yet.

I'll probably try to re-do it again sometime, but like I said, the leak is fairly minor. I'm pretty sure everything was cleaned out well, and to be specific, I'm only having trouble on the top elbow where it goes into the LIM. I cleaned the he11 out of the LIM when I had it off.

The other three elbow joints are fine.

What was surprising is that for the first week or so after I did the LIM gasket jobs on both cars, I meticulously checked for leaks everywhere and it all looked great. Then, in about the second or third week for each car, these elbows started their slow drip. When the car is cold, you can see the leak, but when it is hot, it looks fine. I'm not sure if the leaking coolant is boiling off so fast that you can't see it, or if thermal expansion of the elbow joint is sealing it up after the car warms up.

No big deal, just another (of many) minor annoyances.

Yeah buddy. Clean those holes nice before you stick something in them, right?

Got the elbows today. Gonna install them tomorrow.

Also go an idea to install four $1.58 bolt-on bulbs you can get from Walmart under my hood around the block so I can see better all hooked to a switch then to the battery. Fun stuff!

-- Sat Dec 03, 2011 6:43 pm --

Changed them out today. Wasn't difficult, but tedious.

The gaskets on the old elbows were almost completely gone.

If you wouldn't mind keeping an eye on them and following this up in a week or so with signs of leakage or not, I'd be grateful for the info. Ultimately, I'd like to get mine back to a leak-free condition, but only if there's a reasonable expectation that my efforts won't be in vain.

Just did mine after breakfast today in about 20 mins. Put some spit on the o-rings and was good to go. I have heat again! haha

Put gasket sealant on them. Works better.
