I need to get smogged in Cali by Feb. and i'm getting the p0420 code. I understand i need a new cat but factory is $600. Are there any alternatives that will pass Cali test? what are my cheapest (lol) choices?

mine is doing the same.... luckily MI has no emission testing, thinking about just cutting it out. Side note, my dash is lovely with check engine light, ABS, and traction control lights on. Lots of yellow to look at.

How many miles are on your car? It could still be covered under warranty.

Well this is an 04-08 thread Tom haha. But yeah 105k is no go for warranty. I looked for some bolt in DP/Cats but all the ones I found were only 49 state legal. Damn CARB!!!

Even then I've heard from some friends in Cali that you can't even buy your own cats there anymore. You have to have them installed by a mechanic or muffler shop or done by a dealer. It's illegal to order them on your own and install them yourself anymore. It's really jacked up and another reason I will never live there.

Magnaflow makes California CARB certified hi-flow cats, that's what I used two years ago and I passed with no problems.

so if magnaflow uses CARB cats, then i should be able to get a zzp downpipe 3" 304SS bolt in w/cat and add the rear O2 extension. But when i look at magnaflow website, they only offer CARB cats for up to 03 GP. Am I fkt?

You just get a universal cat that is not car specific (mine is 3" in and 3" out), yes you can get away with using a zzp DP and the universal cat. They won't even be able to tell as along as you have stock exhaust manifolds.

I get away with my headers (TOG's) because I have a CARB sticker that is really only good up to 2002 I believe, but they don't check at the place that I go to.

Your best bet is to order the cat from Jegs or Summit, I think that mine was $236 or something like that.

what size are the exhaust manifolds? is the 3" downpipe and cat overkill for stock manifolds?

Did you try replacing the rear o2 sensor first to make sure its not just a bad sensor?

not yet.... was planning on doing that first but since my resonator is rotting, and i had the p0420, i would start piecing together an upgraded exhaust. I have also been thinking that since my hearing is going slowly, Id make my exhaust as quiet as possible so I would be able to hear crucial problems sooner.

What size are the stock manifolds? Which zzp pipe matches? 2.5" or 3"? I am picking up O2 sensors tomorrow and if they dont work, ordering the 304ss bolt in w/ cat from zzp just not sure which size to go with the stock manifolds.

picked up an O2 sensor today. went to install it and found it to be not the same as what i took out. I have a Delphi 12572772 for the rear O2. The parts guy at the gm dealer asked if the car had the motor replaced or something because his computer didnt show what i had. I gave him my old part number and he checked it out. gm replaced it with a different part number, which he ordered for me. will be in Monday. I hope it fixes the problem lol... the more i read about california and their stupid smog laws, im a little scared of what it will end up costing to fix the p0420. A factory downpipe is $550. a zzp costs $250 and is upgrade... im not quite sure which one to get. havent heard from anyone here in cali that has one.

I would get the ZZP downpipe, I have TOG headers, and I was able to pass smog. The only thing that you really need is an ODBII cat.

ok... so i am about to order the zzp downpipe. 3" SS bolt in w/cat. I will be getting the 3" exit on it as well. That said, I noticed my resonator was rotten and needs to be replaced. It measured around the 40" long. A magnaflow ss resonator is 3" in/out and 20" long. Would it help with noise to add a second resonator? 2 in line.... make it 40".. ?
