when I first start my car the voltage is usually between 14.4-14.6 volts but when I start driving it quickly drops to 12.7-12.8 and sits there. I've been told that this is a gas saving mechanism but seeing as I will be running roughly 3000 rms worth of system I need my voltage to float between 14.3-14.6 while I'm driving. is there a way to bypass this?

It's not "gas saving". There's a voltage drop from the battery during high load activity (i.e. turning the starter motor), thus there's a higher draw on the alternator to recharge the battery, hence the high output voltage from the alternator, then that output will level off when the battery is recharged, leading to mid 12 volt output (similar to the same output voltage the battery should have). As for boosting the alternators output to a steadily higher voltage, I'm not sure. I don't' mess with sound systems.

t

I never had this issue with my old gp it usually sat around 14.4 or so

What year car do you have? I'm pretty sure the 04's hold constant 14+Volts as well like the previous gens. I should clarify, it is a slight gas saver technique, less load on the alternator = less engine load, but the gain is very very small.

I'm sure there's some way to adjust the voltage regulator, even though that might require tweaking the alternator itself and not just the voltage regulator harness.

I took the 04 for a spin last night and my scantool said it was still outputing 14.7-14.6 after about 30 minutes of driving, but that did seem pretty high for what it should be. Apparently the 05+'s can't use the voltage booster, so perhaps their regulators are different.

I'd be happy with mid to low 14 I'm sitting at high 12 or an even 13 and I'm not sure how to get around that

I have an amp and subs hooked up to mine. I am not sure where it was at before installing them. Perhaps it is compensating on it's own?

Good luck finding a decent HO Alt for your car. Give some stats about what you're installing... Brands, models... I can probably prove you don't need anything more than a stock alt. :D

^^This guy know's what's up in this department. He doesn't play any games with sound systems.

they actually aren't that hard to find at all. singer makes the
dc power Ohio gen mechman etc. they are just expensive. also pulling over 150 amps of current from a stock alt is probably not a good idea so I would like to show me your proof in that department

Read up. car-audio-electronics-f8/casper129-stereo-build-log-with-numbers-t17344.html

I just asked about what equipment you'd be using, as I seriously doubt you'll be seeing a true 3000 RMS unless you're running a Sundown 4500 or something of that nature.. And even if you do pull 3000 watts RMS, you won't be pulling that much all the time. Only during peak burps will an amp ever give you full power... In my 147dB video in my link I'm running a team tmh modified kicker 2500.1.. Putting out a whopping 6xx watts at the time of the burp.. And it's not nearly as much about wattage, as it is about design.

And from past experience with my dB Drag team (Team TMH) stay away from Stinger alts.. nothing good comes from them. And Ohio Generator won't make one for the 04+ GP.
