How difficult are these to install? I want to install mine where the vents are beside the steering wheel.

I couldn't tell you from personal experience. but I saw a topic where somebody had done wat I think you want. you want to take out one of the vents between the wheel and door and put it in there right? IIRC the gauge fit with a little room to spare so you'd hav to figure out a way to mount it in there.. otherwise I think it looked pretty cool if you could see it

sorry for providing you with absolutely useless info lol

Hey there!

Do you need a 12V power supply to use an Aeroforce or can you just plug into the OBII connection and use it......whenver you need to run it. I have heard that some GPs need the 12V and others do not.

Thanks!

Per the Aeroforce message forums (http://aeroforcetech.com/forum/), for the 2004+ GP you should not need to use external power. I have the three gauge setup and all three are adequately powered from only the OBD port.

My first install was through the driver's vent ball, then I got set-up for triple gauges and started a rampage  with the triple set-up which also runs fine on the OBD2 port. Now there are a few of us running a three gauge set-up of AeroForce gauges, and I must say best set-up out there. I will also agree that sometimes it will reset itself, but not often, and it is only when I go WOT.

sounds like the amount of data going into those 3 aeroforce's is a little too much for the pcm and it probably then resets itself... guessing your using an odb splitter?

If there reseting with a 3 gauge setup then its possibly pulling to much power from the obd II port - It will work but will cause a reset/power loss in most cases. Your best option would be to run a separate 12 volt source such as the rap IMO.

its easyyyy, those gauges were meant to go into that vent

Just dremel a mount out of the vent ball, plug the vent, drill a hole small enough for the wire into the side of the vent, run the wire to the obd II.

electrical tape is your friend to get the gauge secure and to angle or sit how you want in the ball,

Ya I like how it sits in the vent, but driving in the winter i'm concerned about defrosting with that vent plugged. Maybe i'll concider a pillar set up; seems kinda wasted on just one guage though.

just plug the hole really good, stuff some stuff in there. Theres little resistance as it has the vent beneath it and both are connected to the same inlet.

i used this as a guide, it was in a past thread:
http://home.comcast.net/~warren.family/AFG.html

The bitch is making a good fit for the gauge in the vent ball with the dremel, it takes time and constantly matching it up to check fitment.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to remember the defrost vent for the driver-front window is on a different path than that for the upper "vent-ball" which the Interceptor would go into. By plugging the upper vent so the Interceptor could be installed there, you shouldn't loose the defrost for the driver's front window (however it has been quite a while since I last had the "vent-ball" cover off).

if anything it makes defrost go faster because you have one vent hole blocked off so more air goes to the defrost vent. i have had no problems in almost 2 years now.

The company does not recommend running more than two gauges off OBDII power, and even state in their manual that you should run off 12v if you experience any difficulties or slowness. Pretty sure those resets qualify for that, fellas.

Yea, I think I've come around with regard to my thinking on how I'm powering the gauges since installing them. I recently changed the three gauges to run off of a +12v switched circuit so the only thing the OBD port is being used for is an electrical ground and the serial connection - not pulling power from there anymore.

However, you say that the company doesn't recommend running all three at once off of the OBD port for power - I didn't see anywhere in the manual where it says that (however I did read about the improper start up / shutdown then switch to another / better +12v switched circuit). Not that I'm questioning you however where did you read / hear that? Just curious.

I know for sure that their support guy said it specifically on their forums. I'm second guessing myself now, but I'm pretty certain it's in their manual, which is on their site somewhere.

curious myself...if they dont recommend it why would they sell the triple set with the appropriate splitter to power the 3 gauges? doesnt make sense :?:

They recommend against powering 3 gauges on the OBDII bus because it's not strong enough to support them. GM did not design it to power anything besides the car. They recommend 12v for power. The splitter is for data.

I can not tell a lie, mine were professionally installed. So as far as I know they are running off the OBDII port. But I could be mistaken, I'm not 100% sure I would have to contact them and see if them remember the install.
