I have a 2005 Grand Prix SE/Base/NA/L26/Whatever you want to call it. It recently started over revving with no acceleration in first gear when it's cold outside. Once the car is warmed up the problem goes away and the tranny shifts normally. Is this a normal occurence in the 05 GP, and if so does anybody know how to fix it? Thanks in advance guys. (This is my first post btw)

EDIT: I've only had the car for 5-6 months and this is my first winter with it.

No acceleration and over revving, or do you mean that it revs higher in first gear and takes longer to shift? Just trying to understand the problem more clearly, because there has been a clear issue with 05 GP's for a lot of people with an acceleration issue. I actually have one with my 05

I have the same thing. Or what I believe to be your problem aswell. From a cold start as the engine is warming up the car revs higher before it shifts gears. The problem seems to go away once the car is up to temp.
Really is a pain in the ass.

Anyone know if there is a way to fix this? Or something us 05 owners will have to bear in the cold.

I'm fairly certain that this is normal, to get the engine/transmission up to operating temp faster. Your torque converter won't lock until it reaches a certain temp either. I'm not sure what the temp is, though.

Check the fluid level, and maybe do a trans filter change. The PCS is a common failure on these transmissions, and will cause the issue you're talking about. To me, it seems like a fluid issue as much as anything, be it condition or level.

Yeah that's what I meant. It revs really high before shifting but theres not really any acceleration unless I a. floor it and wait for the gear to shift, or b. take my foot off the gas and let the RPMs drop before accelerating (or attempting to) again.

I took it to a few shops when the problem first started and all of the shops told me that flushing the fluid or changing the filter without knowing the problem could make the problem worse. They also told me that my tranny fluid had just been flushed and changed. No gunk, grime, dirt, etc.

How common would you say PCS failure is? This is my first car and I'm in college so I'm doing minor performance and appearance stuff with my GP while I save for my next car (BMW M3 or M3 GTR). I just want to know if this is something expensive to fix and if I should start looking for a new car. I don't have spare time to take my car to get fixed all the time so if this is something inevitable I want to know so I can plan to either fix it or get rid of it.

The part is like $40 or so. Some say the trans needs to be removed, some say it doesn't. I know it doesn't HAVE to be, but it IS easier. Failure rate is pretty high. Usually it will set a check engine light, for a P1811 code.

Thanks @hotrodolds. I guess I'll get it flushed and have the filter changed just to be safe. Good the PCS isn't expensive.
