I've been using a Plantronics 855 for music in the car. It's great because it's a headset for the phone as well as a stereo headset, but it breaks too easily, isn't made anymore, and the only replacement parts (while inexpensive) are crappy Chinese parts. Because of this I'm looking to set something up to use the phone in the car that's more... not permanent, but I think we know what I mean. Here's what I'm looking for:

  • Play audio from the iPhone (both Pandora and iPod app)
  • Provide power to iPhone
  • Mount phone about the top right of radio for GPS reception and cooling of phone
  • Ideally a mount for phone that's flexible for various cases (using an Otterbox right now)
  • retain all factory functions (XM unused, so XM functionality optional)

I'm also guessing that the speaker on the phone will work find while doing this for calls. I've seen various suggestions, including at post269224.html?hilit=iphone%20monsoon#p269224 but I'm not certain the best way to integrate all of this. I'm not looking for anyone to do all the legwork to find this stuff, but I'm wondering if anyone has done something that's similar before. I'm not budgeting money for this, but I would prefer to spend as little as possible, hopefully not exceeding $200.

So it looks like the USA Spec will work fine (http://www.crutchfield.com/p_581PA11GM/ ... etails-tab) near as I can tell, leaving only a mount of some type correct? Any suggestions, and am I wrong? Also, will my proposed location (top right of stereo) allow for GPS reception? I should also note that the mount would need to be something that's easy to remove the iPhone from.

EDIT: Perhaps this (http://www.pro-fit-intl.com/Adobe/MI-200.pdf) with this: (http://www.pro-fit-intl.com/Adobe/PT-51-04-L.pdf)?

Anyone else done this? I should add that at this point since I think the USA Spec adapter will work (even though it only says '05s) I'm more concerned about how well the mount and location will work.

The mount looks like it will be fine for you but may be a bit inconvenient for your passenger. You don't need your phone in a window for GPS reception. It will get fine reception anywhere in your car. I opted for an aftermarket stereo that has software built in to interface with and control an ipod and works with a iphone as well. And pandora and slacker etc work as well. Basically you can play any audio on your phone and it will come through the stereo, but you can only control the ipod portion through the deck.

Grr... OK, any advise on installing this USA Spec into an '04? I use the 6 disc changer do that's not an option, and I can't easily get the XM method to work. Do I really need to run a line to the trunk?

Now that I'm on the comp and not the phone, here's my problem. Actually it's not a tragedy, just a pain in the ass. I tried installing the USA Spec PA11-GM. Plugging everything in was a piece of cake, and the phone charges, but it won't play on the stereo. It looks like I have to either give up having CD access or cut into the XM wire in the trunk. If I go to the trunk I'll need to splice in some more wire as the supplied wire is WAY too short. I guess the questions are:

* Am I missing something simple?
* What gauge wire should I get to run this (looks smaller then 18 gauge?
* What's the best route to run the wire?

Even better, since I don't use XM, can I just cut the wire and call it good?

Never mind, figured it out with Crutchfields help. All you need to do (if you don't use XM) is not plug the 12 pin connector from the car into the supplied harness. Worked fine :-).
